Alpha Chi decides that academic
integrity is a battle worth winning
Guest Column
By April Stumpff Sharon

Dr. Bill Short
This ve.ir's Alpha Chi National Conlcrcnce in St
I mils Missouri centered on the (heme ol honor and
integrity with emphasis on academic integrity
( olleen Rowley member ol Alpha Chi since col-
lege davs I HI agent and one of Time magazine's
2002 Persons ot the Year was the banquet speaker

She recounted her experience as an agent who
pointed out. to the anger and dismay of her superi-
ors some weaknesses ol the nil's procedure's in
identifying and assessing terrorist activities She
s ud that she and her lamily would have suffered as
il thov weie disloyal to the country if not lor the
piibhcitv her ease received
This illustrates the difficulty of maintaining
integrity in an important sphere outside ol academe
On the theme ot academic integrity Dr Dennis
Organ I xecutivc Director of Alpha Chi reported on
research done by Dr Donald L McCabc of Rutgers
I niversity on the subject of cheating In a summa-
ly ol his studies Dr McCabc reports that over 75
ol surveyed college students admit to some form of
cheating
In a 1999 survey of 21 campuses he reported
"About 33" o admitted to serious or repeated cheat-
ing '
I ongitudinal studies arc not encouraging The
number ot self-reporting instances of "unpermitted
collaboration at nine medium to large universities
increased from 11 in 1963 to 49 in 1993 "
In surveys of students concerning "cut and paste"
methods ol using internet sources without giving
source credit "In 1999 10 admitted to doing it
In 2001 41 admitted doing it "
ven worse in a 1999 survey of 1000 faculty
members on 21 campuses one third of the profes-
sors surveyed admitted to doing nothing about
cheating they had observed in the classroom

battle that must bo won. not only hi schools but in
every walk ol liter
Students first ol all must see examples ol integri-
ty in their teachers and they must learn to proceed
with integiity il our corporations are to give accu-
rate earnings reports il engineers aie to give honest
reliability reports and il auditors are to give reliable
account reports
The Alpha C hi National C ouncil plans to make
this a theme and a pioject lor the next three years
Students at the conference were challenged to think
of ways they can promote a culture ol integrity on
their homo campuses
MeMurry as a University with Coio Vales
(including Christian lailh as the foundation of life
and excellence as the goal ol hie) has a responsibil-
ity to embrace and model academic integrity
Only through the determination and commitment
of students and faculty can MeMurry personify the
honor and integrity that should be inherent to our
university and to higher education in general
Involvement made
for a great 5 years
There's only a few
weeks loll until
school is out and
everyone is ready to
take a break and kick
back
It has been another memorable year
hero at MeMurry for everyone Most
will go home and work summer jobs
and some will stay hero and take summer
classes
I or the seniors it's time to say our last
goodbyes
As I lolled on the last 5 years yes 1
said 5 years (so what 1 took a victory
lap) -1 can recall the first friends I made
and some ol the first things 1 did
I was hesitant at first to stop in to the
MeMurry setting In fact I wasn't very
happy here at all when I first came to
school and my plan was to leave after
my first semester
Everything was set lor me to transfer
to Angclo State until one day I was
walking to class and I started noticing
all the things I had been taking for grant-
ed here I think every person I passed on
my way to class said "Hi Presley" or
"What's up man "
That's when I realised that I didn't
want to leave because I had already
formed a lot of relationships. I guess
that's what's so special about MeMurry
There is a chance to know everybody
and there is a sense ol belonging among
every individual faculty and student
I can say that MeMurry has had its
tip's and down's but one thing gave me
a reason to be here tunc after time The
best decision I ever made was to pledge
I pledged KIVA and after that the rest
is history As I became a part of KIVA I
was becoming a part of MeMurry.

heritage ol this msti-
By Presley Watkins union youhave to get
involved Whether it
is with a social club
sport theatre choir or band the tradi-
tions and the social activ ity are all a
part of the MeMurry Legacy I'm con-
stantly asked "what are your plans after
college'"
My answer is "I wish I knew" but as
much as I worry about the future I'm
not that worried at all I behove that
MeMurry has prepared me for the future
I'll just have to find something I want to
do now Hut that's O K because
MeMurry gave mo more than just a
social life They also gave me an educa-
tion I can't say that I was overly enthused
when I took the core classes but I think
they were the most important part of my
academic experience I believe that col-
lege is more than just a step we have to
take in order to pursue a career It's
preparation for becoming productive and
significant citizen's and it was Mr
Wluttemore one of my Communication
professors who brought to my attention
"that we are the next leaders of our soci-
ety" 1 feel privileged now to have studied
other cultures religions and the influ-
ence of media I believe it will play a
big part in how I make political and
social decisions for the rest of my life
So I want to thank all of those who
have been a part of my life over the last
5 years And to all who's time is not fin-
ished yet
Don't try to live too fast it will be
gone before you know it
