THE CORRAL, ABILENE, TEXAS
TENNIS TOURNAMENT.
The Corral was glad to publish last month an account of the
organization of a tennis club. This month it is a pleasure to note
the interest that is being taken in this healthful sport and the
improvement made by the players.
A tournament programme was arranged beginning Monday
the second and extending to Saturday the seventh. The order
of play was as follows.
Monday: Cooper-King. Winner Cooper, Sets 6-6 to 1-4.
Tuesday: Weakley-Furguson. Winner, Weakley, Sets 6-6 to 4-3.
Wednesday: Prof. Mullins-Airhart. Winner Prof. Mullins. Sets
6-6 to 0-2.
Thursday: Woodward-Rainey, Winner Rainey, Sets 6-6 to 2-0.
Friday winners of Monday and Tuesday: Cooper 2-0 vs Weakley
6-6.
Saturday morning winners of Wednesday and Thursday. Mul-
lins 4-7-* vs. Rainey 6-5-1.
Saturday p. m. winners of Friday and Saturday morning.
Weakley 3-7-6 vs. Mullins 6-5-8.

Prof. Mullins played thirty-five games Saturday evening before
he was able to carry off the trophy. This alone is proof that
Simmons has some excellent tennis players. There is also to be
a series of doubles to be played some time between the ninth and
fourteenth if it is favorable weather.
SIMMONS ORATORICAL CLUB
The club recently organized among the young men is known as
the Simmons Oratorical Club. There have been two regular
meetings, and there are twenty-five members. The Club is open
to young women, but thus far only two have availed themselves
of the privilege. The purpose of the organization is to stimu-
late and promote an interest in public speaking; and members
must be willing to recite, to declaim, to speak extemporaneously,
to write orations or to read, according as the program committtee
shall decree. The time of meeting is on alternate Friday nights
at seven o'clock. One good program has been rendered, each
man coming up well with his part. The Club has in hand the
public program for San Jacinto Day. A good deal of enthusiasm
is manifested, and the society promises to develop into a strong14
