There is nothing horish about Gov Hogg
of Texas He places his veto on the propo-

government under tho McKinley tariff on

in Texas on the round that the payment
of iuch bounties is absolutely without war-

how tho Democrats can consistently voto

course is to have no sharo in any such ill

TEXAS CROPS AND WEATHER
Tho refreshing showers wo have had re-
cently says tho Llano Gazette so tho
farmers and stockmen tell us aro great
blessings They came in the nick of time
and mean bushels of money for Llano
Jack county farmers are rejoicing over
the rain that fell recently and which was
just in time to keep tho splendid wheat
crop in fine growing condition
Abilene Reporter The splendid pros-
pects for an immense small grain crop In
ine Aouene country are very much im-
proved this week by general rains which
have thoroughly soaked the ground Tho
best farmers here say that wheat and oati
will yield exceedingly well and the corn
nearly all of which is planted will cet a lino
start Cotton will ba put in under most
favorable conditions and the grass crops
promise abundant yields
Tho recent rains insure one of the finest
wheat crops cTer harvested in this part of
the country says the St Jo Eerald Mon-
tague county Not only has it been of great
help to the wheat but all other growing
vegotation
Alvord Budgot The vegetable crops in
thU Ticinity will in ail probability be five
times as large this year as in any previous
year The canning company is contracting
more largely than cvsr before and b
sides this there Is being a much larger
acreage planted for shipping to other mar-
kets than has ever been before Add to
this our Immense fruit crop which is now
almost a certainty and t e have a crop to
move that will require more money than
our cotton crop usually requires
Wolfe Citt MarJi 30 Tho outlook for
crop3 was never better The late snow and
freezes pulverized the ground and left it in
bettor condition than L has bejn for i ears
Soinw early corn will pi obably hava to be
planted over

TEXAS IMMIGRATION
Swisher county it not having a big boom
says tho Staked Plains Messenger but she
is enjoying a steady Sow of substantial im-
migrants who are coming to stay and help
develop ths country
Brown wood Banner In 1SS3 Brown
wood was a city of eight hundred or one
thousand people she is now a handsome
little city of thrco thousand five hundred
or possibly four thou3tnd population Then
our people guessed tht Brownwood might
in the nsxt Feneration reach 5000 in
Sho screamed for help and her husband I have had two of tho deepest snows of the
rushed to her assistance Although winter I have located five Tcnnesseeans
ing untold agony she retained her presence I ue Montatrueite one Chicagoan and three
of mind and told him to got a blanket Ho
did thus but It too caught re and It was
necessary to get a second blonkot wrap it
around the poor woman and by hard work
thus extinguish the llkmes Neighbors came
to the husbands assistance and Mrs Davis
was carried to a neighbors while physi-
cians were summoned and tho fire depart-
ment called out to save the dwelling which
was now on fire
The physicians reported quickly and to
then Mrs Davis still conscious remarked
You can appreciate how I am suffering
help mo all you can Chloroform
was first administered and then
hypodermic injections of morphine
So fearfully was ths lady burned tho phy-
sician could not find suflicient area of un
burned skin under which lo inject the mor-
phine except where the corset had pro-
tected it Every hour the doctor called but
could do nothing and at t 40 tho spirit of
Mrs Davis wiiged its flight Sho was con-
scious to tho last and told the loving but
grief stricken husband and daughter what
she desired done aftor her death Among
the last things she said was George never
forget to take our daughter to church on
Sunday One of the attending
physicians stated to a Gazcttb re-
porter last night that he had
never seen a human bing bear pain with
such fortitude he had never witnessed
such Christian strength to endure Not a
moan where a man would have shrieked
or groaned this noble woman bore
her agony without a murmur patiently
The funeral will take place to day at 4

COTTON VERSUS CORN
Let the people of Ellis county raiso moro
com and hogs and by this means bo inde-
pendent for their living and then you will
see everybody happy Midlothian Visitor
Plant moro corn than last year and push
it along with good cultivation There is no
economy in raising cotton and sellinc below
cost to buy corn or anything else Terrell
Register
The papors are giving tho advice raise
less cotton this year but every fellow will
likely plant all he can stand up to They
always do Democrat anj Hcporter
Diversity of crops is a partial security
against failure No farmer should rely on
a sinjrlo crop as there will be too manv
chances against him from drouth inferior
seed short growing seasons and exces-
sively wet weather Some crops will
thrivo when others fail Tha safest mode
is to grow several kinds Dublin Pro-
gress
It is to be hoped that the farmers of
Sholby county will bear in mind that corn
is selling at SI per bushel and very little
for sale at that price and that It would
bo much ibettcr for themselves and tho
county at large if enough corn was planted
to supply the demand instead of depending
on the imported article It would be much
mora profitable to tha farmer to raise his
own corn rather than to raise cotton to buy
corn with Some farmers of Shelby havo
corn to sell evory year and it looks liko
every one could raise at least enough to
supply his own demand Suppose you try
it The Champion

Special Correspondence of the Gazette
New Youk March 25 At homo I was
wont to consider mi self and am sure I was
regardi d by others as a person of refine-
ment but here Im afraid I am looked upon
as a sort of superior savage an amiable and
amusing barbarian
They move about so quietly they never
appear to draw a deep breath or have a
sudden or violent emotion I seem to want
room to be always bumping my elbows
both my real elbows and my verbal ones I
am losing confidence in my mind for suita-
bly diluted terms and cautiously qualifying
my voluntary statements
If its like this In Gotham what would it
be in tho modern Athens f I think they
would muzzle mo bobblo me shoo me with
list aud tie cushions on my elbows then
connect me with a fire and burglar alarm
and hope for the best
I feel it in my bones that I shall grow des-
Eerato some day and hit somebodys crazy
one or step hard on someonos corn and
well see if Im the only one with nerves to
feel or a voice to express my Joys and sor-
rows with Tills being held a sort of wild
thing will do its deadly work and I shall
break out and give them
A TASTE or 11V QUALITY
The primitive idea of man the warrior and
woman the lovo and comforter seems quite
obsolete when you look at a very large class
here There aro such armies and armies of
clerks small salesmen assistant
and such men with small salaries pale
choeks narrow chests and neat whito
hands and moving among and beside them
the other armies of women business
women working women literary nnd pro-
fessional women stout hearted self reliaut
capable earning a living for themselves
aud often for husbands and families too
It is a sort of knocking about of accepted
traditions ths romantic order of things in-
verted
I have been going about among the shops
From the dry goods stores these great ba
zars of silken and luxurious attire alluring
ornament dainty perfume and all those
terrible and irresistible engines for the bat-
tery of beauty gaudy adornments and rav-
ishments to delight the heart of a Josephine
or a Roso du Barry to unman Sennrmis
and win a glanco from Boadicia herself
from all these I got away
COMI AKATIVELT StfE iSD WIIOLB
But when I came to the Japanese store I
was captivated enslaved enchanted I do
so love Japanese fixings I Tho ligbtness and
delicacy tho sharp angular refreshing
graco of their constructions tho impudent
drollery of conceits tho outrageous yet
good humored sarcasm of their grotesques
and the supernatural homblcness of their
two-by-nine monsters all tickle and delight
me Immeasurably
I feel under the fascination of a collection
of birds snakes bugs animals and gob-
lins in plaster fur feathers and scales
averaging about the size of a small ink bot-
tle and weighing an ounce or so apiece
From this gay and festive company this
gang of wild scampish demoralized cynics
this Hecates rout of Becring jibing zoo-
logy ethnology and fancy-run-mad I
only escaped away when I had beggared
myself and both my companions
I bought a crocodile with a leer that
gives me the most delightful jumps a
skeleton sea serpent that would be u moro
effective means of reform than a whole
1 Inebriate asylum an ape a porcupine a
hippopotamus with a sneer a aog oi
soma revised and improved breed a parrot

a fat nnd contemplative toad a pig who
knows the history of the beginning of things
has discovered the whance and the whither
and solved the problem of the wherefore
all for 20 cents too besides several others
that I dont think would translate into Eng-
lish at all
But tho darling of my collection is a five-
inch dragon so utterly frightful and ap-
palling that all the ugiiness of the others
sink into mere insigulncanco In compart
His scales that stand up along his seri
tine back in horrent rov 3 are little she

and red flannel wear such looks
COOL DEVILTRY
He cost eighty five cents and by virtue
of his higher price as well as his superior
gifts is regarded by me and by all of
them too as tho choice and mastor spirit
of the assembly
I never lack for sensations now I lit
fascinated btforo this gathering of em-
bodied sins and follies crimes mistak3
and failures gay effronteries sluggish in-
differences And sullen despair I beliave
that under thir uncanny influenca I could
write a wild wlerd tala ose that would

Ive been coin to tin aters too I hav
seen Bernhardt in CamiUo at the Gardes
theater
Writ a curious commentary on social in-
stitutions and comcntions it is if jou uiJ
but think of it a minute thj great Sarah
portraying with all the resources of bcr ari
all the cl irm of hr gjuiu ihj loveli-
ness the winning glace sweetness and d
votionof a woman belongag to that clasi
which all cood well regulated women con-
demn Her jouug ardent and sincers
lover who Is u handsome follmv with an
attract iw ingenuous face well suited la
the parti loves adorer her he flies to hot
enraptured at her final iHUinission to corao
his oico taress uirhU eos worship
He pleads etmvats u ith all the oloqusnci
of passionate lovo and with her hands
clasped in his his glowing ardent youni
face bent cagerl almos against hers Ana
at this scene amid such surroundings and
between such lover look ou dozens of in-
tensely iespectole and

papas and manunu who would be horrified
at the bare thought that Amelia would per-
mit Eugene who is noi h r cngged lover
a smglo small kiss Thev are seomingly
quite as much moved and interested aj
though they bad a right to be
When Cumilloi female friends and theit
admirers come in a supper is served and
great hilarity prevails those per ous thesd
irreproachable persons laugh quite natur-
ally at the jests and n itticibtns When
Camille sacrifices herself in a very un
pretty and Frenchy wai for Armand4
good they wipj their eyes and noses and
Alien she finally dies they snuVe outrigli
Now if or I mean which or
rather how No I give it up
Of Bernhardt s art the power and grace
and charm it seems to mo there could not
bo a question though I confers I was not
moro impressed by them than I have some-
times been in much moro obscure actresses
She is a woman of taste an artist he
dresses aro not more costly and magnificent
than exquisitely harmonious and becoming
The old jokes upon her thinness will cer-
tainly havo to be retired now She is
XO LONOtn TUI AT ALL
Then I went to sou Booth in Hamlet
Booth who was alwajs of all who tread
tho stage my ideal my prince of actorsi
It isnt necessary to bo invidious bacausi
you adinire one actor or actress more thai
others What is it Paul says about onji
star different from another star in glory V
Thats it One is greater in some one ret
spect and another in some othsr aud tha
scholarly refiiieniUit of Booths conceptions
the delicacy the beautiful repute and maj
esty of his 1 enditious always charmed ma
to the last degree When as Hamlet ho
instructs the players 1 always think how
himself is suggested as the opposito of tho
ranters he condemns he is always so beau
tifully controlled expressing so much with
his splendid eyes his speaking features a
single eloquent gesture an attitude an la
flection
Now It may not bo becauso he is oldar
but only because I am older but it secmstj
to me 1 looked in vain for much I had seen
in his Hamlet six years ago Face figure
carriage and above all spirit seemed
AGED ASU lIsTLEsS
ClThe conception was the samu of course
the dignity and grace were there the fine
eyes the fine voice but the glanco and
tone that electrified the wholi house when
ho cried Nay I know notl Is it the
kingi or tojehed every heart when his
despair bade Ophelia Gut thee to a nun-
nery were lacking
I noticed too with astonishment that
tho house was about half full and of the
cishteon boxes only one was occupied
But when 1 get homesick and stilled witfc
city life and long for tho open skies and
prairies I go to some good stirring play
something beloved of the people with a
fine good looking well made hdro iu it
physically Invincible mentally and morally
infallible and with a fetching way of hold-
ing the heroines face in the hollow of his
hand up against his breast as you would 3
little tender babjs after ho has smashed
windows laid out the villain and gone
through fire and water to rescue her
There i3 plenty of good bumptious
swash buckling eloquence in this sort c
play a villain who has somebody in y
power a good old man with a secret
and a pair of lovers with a barrier
their union Thero is usually too a fin 1
dog often horses soma good singing anl
plenty of noise and excitement and I fin
it a veiy fair substitute whan a good pla
of its kind like the Still Alarm with it
fire engine and beautiful white horses fot
a gallop across tue plains or a rossle witl
a pony with preconceived lcoos or tning3
