Gallant General Greene
An interesting little incident is
given by the San Antonio Times
which occurred in tho eaarly his-
tory of Texas to Gen Tom Green
the lamented who was one of the
most successful and gallant com
manders of the civil war He was
a soldier at the battle of San Ja
cinto afterward engaged in the
ranging service under tho repub
lic and was a capiaian at the taking
of Monterey in the Mexican war
While commanding a company in
pursuit of some Comanche Indians
he had surrounded them with short
arms Colts repeaters The men
wore on foot but ho had ridden
iny thu tlfjfckot onr ht5 ponyr
About the close of tho fight
nn Indian started up from
under a bunch of pears and jump
ed astride of his horse behind him
The Indian caught him around his
arms and commenced talking to
him very fast in a language he did
not understand He was more
alarmed than he ever rras in his
life and could as he imagined feel
tho fatal knife entering between
his ribs every moment He turn-
ed his pistol so as to shoot behind
him on first one side and then the
other and the Indian would take
hold of it and turn away the muz-
zle At last making a desperate
effort to turn in his saddle to shoot
with certainty his eye caught
sight of the breast of a woman
and of courso he desisted She
was a handsome Indian girl about
15 years of age that had taken
this means of saving her life He
carried her behind him into camp
turned her over to some friendly
Lipan Indians that were in com-
pany with them Then tho gallant
young chief Flacco took her for a
wife About a year afterward she
made hor escape to the Coman
ches
tYt the commencement of the
var Gen Greene commanded a
regiment afterwards a brigade and
the last year of the war he was a
Major General in command of the
sippi department and not only
did he servo Texas well in her
early history but it was mainly
his successful daring dash as com
mander that prevented the federal
forces from overrunning this state
and laying waste tho country as
thoy did tho lower portion of Lou-
isiana which state remembers
him and his men with gratitudo
and the states east of the Missis
sipi river He possesses the ut
most confidence of his old brigade
and others who knew him well
and though he planned and fought
a large number of battles almost
invariably at great odds he never
lost a fight until just before tho
close of hostilities and then he
lost his life When Tom Greeno
as he was familiarly called led
the way there was no place how-
ever desperate that his old bri
gade to a man would not go with a
whoop and a will It was his pow-
erful will power that forced the
battle of Mansfield although he
was third in command Gen Dick
Taylor his senior on the field
and General Kirby Smith at a dis-
tance and it was mainly Gen
Greens strategy and skill that
rendered the days work at Mans-
field memorable as one of tho de-
cisive victories of the war over the
invading forces Sirby Smith
was in command of the transMis
gppi department and it was gener
ally understood that his oraSrs
were not to fight and that Dick
or hesitated but tho poorly
fed over marched confederates
were tired retreating eager to
fight and they were placed into po
sition against odds of some three
to one and tho most important
battle of what is known as Banks
Bed river campaign was fought
Before tho opposite forces could
be concentrated from Texas Mis
sourrand Arkansas Gen A P
Banks reached Natchitoches La
with his finely equipped army of
sixty thousand men and their
baggago declaring that his onward
movements to the glorious west
across the beautiful prairies
would soon bo characterized by
tho arrival of himself andhis
army
at the capitol of Texas A few
days afterward tho haughty gener-
al returned much crestfallen and
in great disorder to tho beautiful
little city that had witnessed his
pompous departure and not know-
ing tho cause of tho hasty return
it was the immediate inquiry of
tho acquaintances he loft behind
Well General what is the matter
We thought that you wero going
to Texas Well replied ho

dealing instruments were silenced
and classed among tlje spoils of
that bloody days work In pursu-
ing Gen Banks retreating army
Gen Greene met his Waterloo at
Blairs landing on Bed river while
trying to capture three gun boats
vith mainly fresh forces or at
least unused to the deafening roaj
of heavy artillery his old brigade
being otherwised engaged 10 mile
away His intention was to got
bis forces under his immediate
command down under tho high
banks to the waters edge below
tho range of the huge guns and
whore the gunners could be easily
annihilated by the rifles of his
dismounted msn but notwithstand
ing he led the way and the way of
easy descent his superb gallantry
proved of no avail for tho rapid
firing of 150 lb shells into the
ranks of his comparatively untried
men caused fear to seize hold npon
them and although Gen Greeno
sat erect on his horse immediate-
ly on tho bank sword in hand
urging them to follow him they
could not rally thero ho fell his
head almost entirely severed by a
6hell grandly in his only defeat
and his last words were Oh
that I had my old brigade At
the battle of Mansura after Gen
Greenes death his old regiment
was placed under heavy artillery
fire and alter tile engagement
Gen Majors then in command
exclaimed No wond ° r that Gen
Greene was proud of his old regi-
