Iterort of the Grand Jury
To tho lion District Court in and for
San Saba county Texas at the April
terra A D IKK
AYe tho grand jury having dis-
charged our duties so far as has
been within our power hereby
submit this our report showing
tho results of our labors and con-
dition of our county as regards
crime
AATo bcliove that tho moral stam
ima of our people is in tho ascend
ency and that tho violators of tho
law are seeking protection else-
where nnd other fields for depre
dations as is shown by tho small
number of indictments returned by
us at this term
AYe believe however that there
is still room for improvement in
redeeming the good reputation of
our county which has been hereto-
fore staggering under the load of
oppression that has been imposed
upon her during the existenco of
tho late formidable issue based
upon tho differences between some
of her citizens AYe refer to the
our j official management of theso af
fairs and particularly to our in-
vestigation of the CampbellHart
mau murder The grand jury wa3
informed by tho district nttornoy
during tho first week of court that
there wore probably others impli-
cated in said murder than those
already indicted and gave tho
names of such witnesses as ho
deemed most important for tho
purpose of making further inqui
ry into the commissionofsaid of-
fense and we were strongly solid
ten by the district attorney to make
said inquiry
After disposing of other matters
on hand we informed the district
attorney on Tuesday of the second
week that we were then ready to
take up the investigation of the
Hartman murder He informed
us then that it was too late in
tho term to take the matter up
and besides that he had consulted
with others interested in the pros-
ecution of said case and that they
for reasons best known to them
selves had decided not to make
said investigation AYe as grand
jurors acting under our oaths and
believing such investigation nec-
essary to the ends of justice insis-
ted upon an inquiry into the case
and in consequence issued proces-
ses for witnesses and caused them
to bo placed in tho hands of the
proper officers
AYhereupon the grand jury was
informed nnd believe that J B
Hartman the father of tho mur-
dered boy was notified by some-
one that ho would probably be
wanted before the grand jury and
acting upon said information the
