Ins of Carthage
That prom I city once thepiide
of Africa the rival of Borne though
fallen still i > rnaments a page of
universal his ry and gives a strik
ing example ij > f the departed glory
of a Nations imbition The grand
and magnificient Carthage once
stood where today stands Tunis
on the southern shores of the Med-
iterranean set The exiled and
banished Que n Dido passing that
way remarked tho beautiful loca-
tion and resolved to found a city
that should awaken the jealousy of
horlost empiri and rival in power
splendor and magnificence the Sev-
en Hilled city She secured the
lands by strategy founded plan
ned and built i city that astonish
ed even horse and sent a thrill
of fear over the most protent
crownheads of the then world
Borne and Carthsge vied with each
other each striving for the crown
of the world each jealous of the
other and each fearing Borne
the accustomed ruler Carthage in-
vincible proud and ambitions
Tho challenge vas sent the swords
in bloody combat crossed The
three fierce cruel and relentless
Punic wars followed The two
leaders of tho world confronted
each other Sm aller nations stood
agasp while the destiny of tho
world was descending upon the
dreadful encount The destruc
tion of one or th i other of these
proud citie3 web inevitable If
Borne fell European greatness
and grandure censed if Carthage
fell African progress was checked
and that proud city ruined Years
of carnage were spent in dreadful
and bloody contests each battle
field marked with thousands of
lifeless bodies while the morn-
ings christal deis in the sunlight
sparkling red with the tint of
human blood anc for what to sat-
isfy the greed and the jealousies
of two cities too great for one
world to contain hence one must
perish Thus tlwse wars contin
ued until the fieros daring warrior
Hannibal the reatest general
Africa has ever produced gained
control of the Carl hagenian forces
He determined thitt the end must
come He collected all his armies
and started for Bo ne He landed
on European soil but the great
Alps lay between him and Eome
and just beyond the Alps lies
Italy How typical of mans
life the full reaization of his
cherished hopps lies always just
beyond Hannibll with tho
grandest army Africa ever sent to
the battle field scaled the mighty
Alps Lead on by jthat daring im-
pulse which knows mo barriers up
the high mountaics ihey slowly
made their way until from the
snow covered snmn its they conld
look down on their snomy Eome
Slowly they descended and slowly
the great Alps sfint out from
them Africs sunny clime Slow
ly they went down the rnggy
steeps and slowly the ruin of Car
thage came on Ecjmes choicest
army was sent aga nst him but
Hannibal was again victorious and
the doom of Rome seemed to hover
oer the city At the moment of
victory Hannibal parsed and de-
layed his triumphal march And
Rome availing herself of the pres-
ent opportunity seat an army
against Carthage Hannibal has
tend back to the daonse of his
city but to no avail He was de-
feated and his army 1 onted Sci
pio had conquered Hinnibal In
the course of half a century the
war was renewed more fierce more
cruel more determined than ever
before Carthage was captured
and this was the end of that city
Home determined that her enemy
should perish had the city reduced
to ashes For seventjen days the
destructive flames laged until
there was not a vestage left while
the smoke ascending in graceful
curves seemed to reach tho face of
heaven as if to light the way for
the angels to look down upon the
destruction of that ence mighty
city Eome again stoad the impe-
rial mistress of tho world But
time has worked it cht nges Car
thage has been swept from th
face of the earth and great Eome
is but an humble city
MY MDSIKG8
The above sketch while histor
ical is illustrative of life Had
Eome been satisfied with her pos-
session kept down ber envies
and jealousness devoted her
energies towards her own immedi-
ate interests and had teen content
to make her own people and those
doponding upon her happy and
prosperous she would have been
DRUGS M
Paints Oils
Only the Forest and
to the Jobbing Trade
better off than by conquering Car
thage And had Carthage atten-
ded to her own affairs she might
to day have been a city proud and
grand But there lived for Car-
thage a Scipio And Eome once
held undisputed sway yet she is
now humbled and she too seems to
have met a Scipio Could people
but live in peace keeping their
envies spites and prejudices in
subjection they and others would
be better contented more prosper-
ous and happy But human na-
ture unrestrained like the spirit
that moved the
will pluck and sj
is forced the swe
the one or the otl
and Scipio jssjgtjqPiei
Had the two great cities dwelt in
peace the world would have con
tained them both Could man
but live in peace with his fellow
man the world wonld contain all
But ever and anon these person
al spites will crop out in some
little act or word and generally
under cover of something that
would seem a reasonable excuse
for the word or act The worst
lie of all is a half told truth
Just beyond the Alps lies Italy
Hannibal never took into consider-
ation that just beyond the Alps
was Scipio Men who neglect
their own affair to attend to the
affairs of others will like Hanna
bal meet a Scipio and even should
they be successful in the affairs
of this world unless they be
careful Scipio will encounter them
in enternity Eome conquered
Carthage but to day Carthage is
not and Eome is scarce better
And what if man should conquer
his fellow man in a few year will
they not be as Carthage and Eome
Life is short Why not make the
best of it If man could but so
school himself as to lay aside his
spites envies jealousies etc and
live consistently in peace and friend
ship with his fellowman all would
be bettor off all would be happier
all would be more prosperous and
contented and less likely to meet
Scipio at the Grave If mail
would be not too quick to discern
the faults of others but seek rath-
er to correct the the errors in him
self remembering that Ho who
expects no faults to see expects
what neer was and neer will be
and also that it is human to err
but divine to forgive not only
would ho be better off bat all with
whom he comes in contact Seek
to love ono another and dwell to
gether in peace and christian char-
ity If you are accustomed to
misrepresent your neighbor con-
quer yourself lest you fall into the
hand of Scipio
Hannibal paused at tho moment
of victory Had he gone immedi-
ately to Eome his ambitious hopes
would have been fully satisfied
But that delay caused his ruin
In lifo it frequently happens that
man strives and works until the
object of his ambition and the full
matenalizatiou of hope is at
hand but like Hannibal he de-
lays his final effort nnd the object
vanishes Thore is in the above
food for the reflective minds my
pen cannot portray nor do I pro
poso to think for others But kind
reader pause and reflect I shall
cross over into Southern Europe
perhaps to EomeYorBS

Some ungrateful lobbleheaded

members of the Farmers Alliance
that the News ivas giving the Al-

doubt a friend to the Alliance and
it would seem as though that fra-

certainly has a better opinion of
himself and his own ability than
he has of the whole Alliance or
