Resacas.--Cameron-Hidalgo-Willacy Counties; Rio Grande; these reservoirs are
primarily for storage of water during periods of normal or above-normal flow min
the river for use when the river's current is low. Some of these are old loops and
bends in the river that have been isolated by the river changing its channel. They
are known by the Spanish name as resacas. Also a number of reservoirs have
been constructed and connected with the main channel of the river by ditches
through which the reservoirs are filled either by gravity flow or by pumping.
This is reserve irrigation water for use during periods of low flow in the river
channel. Most of these reservoirs are near the main channel of the river, but
some of them are 20 or 25 miles distant.
