Records in the following summary are principally those for Texas high schools and colleges, major football
bowl games in Texas, and in some cases professional sports involving Texas teams. Records were obtained from
the sponsoring organizations which can supply more detailed information.Professional Sports
Professional sports, especially football and baseball,
have wide fan interest in Texas and followers of pro
hockey, basketball and soccer are growing in number.
Capsule reviews of professional athletic teams in the
state are as follows:
National Football League
The Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Oilers
have fielded professional football teams in Texas since
1960. The Cowboys were an expansion team in the NFL
and the Oilers a charter member of the American Foot-
ball League.
The two leagues merged in 1966 and, since they be-
gan playing an interlocking schedule in 1970, the Cow-
boys are in the National Conference and the Oilers in
the American Conference.
