. The lowest point registered on
.Friday by the government thermom-
eter at the union depot was twenty-
three degrees or nine degrees below
the freezing point. This was at
o'clock in the morning. At noon it
registered thirty degrees and at six
o'clock in the evening had still fur-

nude. She will not even sleep on a
bed. There is no way of heating the
jail and the only .way in which the
prisoners can keep warm in cold

Os Friday morning as a north-
bound Santa Fe freight train was
proceeding just ahead of the passen
ger train a mile and a half south of
town the locomotive collided with
the wagon of a Jewish peddler from
the city loaded with chickens and
country produce. The engineer
whistled several times for the peddler
to clear the track but the wind was
blowing hard and ho didn't hear
it. The wagon was knocked from
the track and smashed into kindling
wood and one of the horses was in-
stantly killed. The peddler whose
name could not be learned was him-
self considerably biuiso J about the
face and arms. He was brought into
town and Dr. S. F. Styles was suni-
jnoned and dressed his wounds.
The name of the Jewish peddler
whose wagon came to grief on the
Santa Fe road below town on Fri-
day is H. Levitansky. Ho is a
young man about 23 or 24 years of
age- He is resting well now and is
not considered seriously hurt. His
other horse however will die. Bil-
lio Wehmeyer says he saw the catas-
trophe when it happened and that
the whistle was not blown nor the
bell rung. In that case there would
appear to bo a cause for action
against the railroad.
