the school closes. The new build-

appearance of the college.
There are seventy-eight students
enrolled at Blinn college this term
although the last term of the school
year is always the most poorly at-
tended on account of somo of the
students having to work- on the
farms. There were only forty stu-

It is likely tbat Prof. Thos. Fitz
Hugh of the University of Texas
committee on approved high schools
will shortly visit tbeBrenham schools
to examine into the course and pro
gress in Latin. In a recent letter

In a circular letter Supt. Cooper
savs that the department of educa
tion is distributing to the high
schools of Texas rocks etc. to aid in
the teaching of geology. To secure
these specimons applicants must
furnish each a show case 8 feet long
and 3 feet wide and bear the ex
pense of transportation. The speci
mens are rare and will be sent named
and numbered and are well worth
the outlay necessary to get them.
The old method of teaching science
from the text-book without appara-
tus etc. no longer obtains in public
high schools subject to supervision
inspection ana examination.
The next annual report of the
Brenham schools will contain a full
explanation of. the course of study
for each department for the benefit
of patrons who do not appear to
understand the present methods of
teaching.
Col. Guy M. Bbyax who has been
untiring in his laudable efforts to so-

Texas veterans to' the annual reun

ceeded in accomplishing his purpose.
He has just received a second letter
from Mr. George Sealy of the Santa
Fe road doing away entirely with
the red tape process. All members
of the veterans association without
reference to the time when they
came to Texas or what service they
rendered will now be transported
free the only requirement being
that they must be able to present a
certificate signed by tbe secretary
and president of the Veterans' asso-
ciation showing that they are mem-
bers. Eupepsy.

pointed to prepare and report plans
for the organization of a board of
trade. Everybody who owns prop
el ty in the city or who expects to
make his home and his living hero
and who feels in any way interested
in tbe town ought to attend the
meeting. There must bo harmony
unity and concert of action among
the citizens to make Brenham pros
perous. JLno people can t auord to
bo at logger-beads or to pull against
one another.
Oxe of the Brenhamites who went
down to Rockport on a speculating

story business house for thirty-five
dollars a month.

Property on tin- Up filmic
While there is no wild rush after
dirt and no desire manifested by
anybody hereabouts to own tho
earth still there is a juiet and confi
dent feeling that property in Bren-
ham is xi good thing to invest in.
This was manifested by a sale which
took place on Friday. Less than
two years ago Judge C C. Garrett
purchased a lot on South Market
street betw een the old Baker place
and Mr. A. Jeffries' place which
was formerly a part of the Baker
homestead for one thousand dol-
lars. On Friday he sold half of his
lot to Mr. C. W. Winkelmann of the
firm of Winkelmann & Bohne for
one thousand dollars. In other
words Judge Garrett sells half of
his property for what he gave for
the whole of it and realizes one
hundred per cent interest on hiE in-
vestment in less than two years.
Property which is on the market has
gone up in price all over the city.

It will be remembered that at the
time of the death of Hon. Jefferson
Davis the ex-confederate chieftain a
meeting was held in this city to pass
lefcolutions expressive of the sense
of the people of the community. At
this meeting a resolution was also
adopted declaring in favor of raising
subscriptions for the purpose of
erecting a monument to Mr. Davis'
memory and Capt. T. C. Clay Mr.
E. Reichardt Judge C. C. Garrett
Mr. Boling Eldridge and W. W.
Searcy Esq. were appointed on the
committee to solicit subscriptions.
They have delayed acting in the
matter until some concerted meas-
ures could be arranged and co-operation
secured in the work all over the
South. They are now prepared to
solicit and receive subscriptions to
the Jefferson Davis monument fund
and those disposed to give to this
purpose are respectfully invited to
all at Mr. Boling Eldridge's store
and put down their names. The
subscriptions will be due in October
if not paid cash. The list was
opened on Thursday and fifty dol
lars was subscribed m a little while

Here is another chance for Bren-
ham to secure a railroad. A special
dispatch from Navasota to the Gal
veston News on Friday reads as fol-
lows. Navasota Tex. April 10. Colonel
Goree and about fifteen other gen
tlemen from Huntsville were met at
the opera house by a large crowd of
Anderson and Navasota people for
the discussion of the feasibility of a
railroad from Huntsville heie. It
was decided to run two preliminary
surveys one by Anderson and one
to miss that place the cost of the
surveys to. be diveded equally be
tween tho three points. A commit
tee was appointed to confer with
Brenham and La Grange looking to
the building of the road in that di-
rection via Washington.
The proposed road would be of
considerable advantage to Brenham
and it ought not to cost much to
secure it.
Me. C. C. Lockett the well known
attorney formerly of this city and
who practiced law at Caldwell for
several years is now running a hotel
at Kerrvillo a delightful town seven-
ty miles northwest of San Antonio in
the mountains and the present
nothwestern terminus of the Aran-
sas Pass railroad. Mr. Lockett ad-
vertises his hotel as the only second-
class one in America. He also adver-
tises that there are plenty of game
and fish there and that when guests
cannot find anybody to go fishing
with them the proprietor will go
himself without extra charge.
