Champ Clark's Speech. j
York Pa. May 10. Congress-
man Champ Clatk of M'cieouri
spoke before the Democratic sooiety
of this place today on the woik of
congress. IHh speech was sharp
and vigorous. It suited the Demo-
crats hero exactly. Following arc
some of the leading passages of the
address:
Some Simple Simons speakiug
without knowledge talk as though
Democracy were in artioulo mortis.
Why reason without their host?
Truth is immortal. Democracy is
truth and can never die.
It may be sold out betrayed
stabbed in the house of its friends;
but it 16 the last human institution
that will perish from the earth.
Democracy has more lives than
all the felines in Cat Island and
this: fact should give them pause
who prematurely write its epitaph.
The poople will l ot let Domoc
racy die; because the aspiration of
the human heart is for constitution-
al government; and there can be no
constitutional government without
Democracy.
The Democratic party like An
taeus a celetiraiea wrestler oi an
tiquity receives new Htrength eviry
time it touches the ground and r'i6ea
reinvigorated for future contests.
When its fortunes appear to sink
the lowest it is not approaching a
Htato of dissolution but is expori
enemy: a Beason of recuperation.
It has demonstrated beyond all
cavil that in opposition it is the
gtcatest and bravest party the world
ever saw ana wnen it nas purgou
itself of certain recalcitrant elo.
ments it will prove that it has not
lost its cunning and its courao
w hen intrusted with power.
For thirty years we wandered in
the wilderness while the Republicans
beld a Saturnalia in the nation's
cap'tol.
Fourteen months ago we reached
the promised land.
Why wns Grover Cleveland
elected in 1892 ?
Not by reason of his winning
manners; lor he is a man plain even
to blunlness. Not on account of
his civil service reform ideas; bo-
I cause on these nobody agrees with
him exuont the mugwumps. JNot
first instance in the entire annals of
the human rac in which the victors
were asktd to surrender to the vau-quishod.
