Texas Retail Trade
The number of stores and the dollar value
of the retail trade of Texas, by lines. is
shown below, according to the latest offlolal
census, which was that of 1940 for the calen-
dar year, 1939. The figures on number of
stores are still fairly representative. The inter-
vening years have been characterized by the
small number of both commercial failures and
new business enterprises. However, the fig-
ures on sales for the year, 1946, are estimated
at about 80 per cent greater than those of
1939, partly because of the increased prices
and partly because of an increased physical
volume of goods sold. The table below is
presented as the latest official data available

RETAIL TRADE, BY COUNTIES
Figures below on retail trade in Texas are
from the federal census of 1940, covering
business during the calendar year, 1939. with
some comparative figures from the censuses
for the years, 1935 and 1929. The official data
for 1939 are the latest available. Unofficial
estimates for sales In 1945 are given for the
counties In the articles on counties on pp.
437-536. Data for 1939 on number of stores
and number of employees and proprietors are
fairly representative in 1945-46, but dollar
value of retail sales has advanced about 80
per cent during the 1939-1945 interval because
of increased prices and larger volume of
goods sold. Figures below are given as the
latest official government aata and as a basis
for comparison with the sales figures given
in the county articles, pp. 437-536.
