sas, Copano and St Charles Bays Part prairie,
part wooded Created from Refugio County 1871,
organized same year, named for Rio Nuestra
Senora de Aranzazu. Alt. sea level to 50 ft., ann.
rainfall 31 32 min., mean ann. temp. 70. Growing
season, 324 days.
Resources. Sandy, loam and heavy coastal clay
soils Oil, 820,463 bbls and natural gas. Heavy
growths of live oak, mesquite. Dredging of mud-
shell, commercial sale of fish and oysters, impor-
tant industries.
Crops: Some corn, grain sorghum production.
Tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, onions, cabbage, beans,
potatoes, grapes, figs, strawberries.
Livestock Sale of beef cattle and calves main
industry. Some dairying, poultry, honey produc-
tion Hereford and Mixed Brahma cattle marketed.
Tourist income. Redfish, tarpon, trout, flounder
fishing, deep-sea fishing boats. Of interest are
Taylor Tree where Gen. Zachary Taylor camped
and Goose Island State Park with large live oak.

tourist center and shipping point for marine life.
Aransas Pass (4,095) is deep-water port, fish,
petroleum shipping point and tidewater terminus
for oil, carbon black plant.
*ARCHER COUNTY
Rolling county in North Central Texas, on broad
divide between Trinity and Red River watersheds,
largely prairie. Created from Fannin County 1858,
organized 1880, named for Dr. Branch Tanner
Archer, Texas Commissioner to United States, Sec-
retary of War under Lamar. Alt. 900-1,300 ft., ,
ann. rainfall 24.63 in., mean ann. temp. 65.1".
Growing season, 219 days.
Resources: Light sandy, red, dark and black
loam soils. Mesquite, post oaks in breaks. Supply
underground water. Oil production 7,858,615 bbls.,
natural gas; copper, clay deposits.
Crops: 337,368 bu. wheat, 225,684 bu oats,
grain sorghums, barley, corn, cotton. Fruits, veg-
etables for home use. Austrian winter peas, hairy
vetch new crops. Postwar return to farm notice-
able. Some irrigation.

Duro Canyon in southwest. Created from Bexar
County, 1876, organized 1890, named after pioneer

mean ann. temp. 56.5. Growing season, 192 days.
Resources: Deep gray and chocolate loam soils.
