U.S. Government
PRESIDENT.--Dwlght David Eisenhower,
the thirty-fourth Pr~sident of the United
States, was elected in the general election,
Nov. 6, 1956. (See p. 476 for popular and
electoral vote.) The President is elected by
the people through the Eetoral College for a
term of four years. Salary is $100,000 with a
taxable expenSe allowance of $50,000, plus
$40,000 nontaxable expense allowance. Term
of office begins 'on Jan. 20 under the present
law. Prior to second term of Franklin D.
Roosevelt, inauguration date was March 4.
No President, -under the Twenty-second
Amendment to the Constitution, may be
elected to the office of President more than
twice, and no person who has served more
than two years of an unexpired term of an-
other person may be elected more than once.
The first native Texan to become President,
Dwight David Elsenhower was' born Oct. 14,
1890, at Denison; Texas, where the building
in which he was born still stands. His par-
eants were David Jacob and Ida Elizabeth
Stover Eisenhower. He is descended from a
family of German Mennonites who arrived as
iminlgrants in Pennsylvanian in the 1780's and
moved to Kansas a few years later.
VICE-PRESIDENT.-Richard Milhous Nixon
was elected for concurrent term with the Presi-
dent (See p. 476) and draws a salary of
$35,000 a year with taxable expense allowance
of $10,000. He serves ex officio as President
of the Senate.
UNITED STATES CABINET
Cabinet members are appointed by the President
with advice ;and =consent of the Senate and terms
of office run from time of appointment to end of
presidential administration, unless vacated by
resignation or otherwise. Salary is $25,000.
