Two new Texas titles
Houston, the Bayou City
BY DAVID G. McCoMB
Houston, the Bayou City covers the main events of Houston's
economic, political, and social history from the founding of the
town in 1836 to the present. While primarily concerned with the
economic and business development of the city, the book offers
lively glimpses of the old days of plank roads, mud, mule cars,
saloons, and casual shooting from the hip. Yellow fever, racial
tension, Spindletop, conservatism, freeways, air pollution, the
Astrodome, the Manned Spacecraft Center, the Alley Theatre,
Jones Hall, and the tallest building west of the Mississippi-all
are part of Houston's story.
This urban biography explores the causes of growth from
the earliest settlement and offers insight into the character of
Houstonians, then and now. Illustrated. $7.50
Geology and Politics in Frontier Texas,
1858-1909
By WALTER KEENE FERGUSON
Conservation and development of natural resources have been
matters of public concern in Texas since legislators first adopted
the state-sponsored geological survey as a means of extending
government funds to private citizens who would help develop
and advertise the mineral and agricultural wealth of Texas.
Walter Keene Ferguson examines the relation of politics to
geological exploration during a critical period in Texas his-
tory-the first half-century of statehood. He shows the political
and economic environments that prevailed when each of five
surveys was created, and evaluates the contributions of the sur-
veys to an understanding of the geology of Texas. $6.50
