self (including four of the six pictures used here-figs. 43, 45, 46, and 48).
Walke has been considered a romanticist, but one critic feels that he
was also a realist in the nineteenth-century tradition. He depicted Perry
standing on the paddlewheel box of his flagship (fig. 43), hundreds of men
rushing ashore with their commodore in the lead (fig. 46), and the sailors
in the boats giving three lusty cheers as the American flag is raised on
Mexican soil-romantic scenes to the core. But the subjects in the pictures
might be a result more of choice than of romanticization, because Morison
concluded after a thorough check that Walke's prints are accurate."
Although the Mexican defense on both land and sea was valiant, it was
hopeless. Superior American fighting men and weapons defeated them at
