talking to hundreds of teachers, students, and laymen about the Associa-
tion's educational programs. The Texas Education Agency, the regional
service centers, and several colleges and universities throughout the state
have been especially helpful in promoting Junior Historian work.
WEBB HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Clifton Caldwell and several members of the Caldwell family gave
$5,000 to the Association to establish the C. M. Caldwell Endowment Fund
to reward outstanding writing achievements by Webb Historical Society
members. This fund is a particularly appropriate memorial to C. M. Cald-
well since he was a close friend of Walter P. Webb and since he helped
Webb finance the early public school Texas history writing contests.
The Texas Educational Association of Fort Worth has provided funds
to the Association for an honorarium of $I,ooo to be presented each year
for the next five years as an award for outstanding leadership in promoting
understanding of the American way of life. Nominations for this award will
be supported by scrapbooks and/or other documentation. It is not intended
as a writing or teaching award per se, although such activities might be
the basis of a nomination if they can be shown to constitute leadership ex-
tending to a significant audience.
The J. M. West Texas Corporation gave a gift of $i,ooo to the Asso-
ciation to help offset some of the cost of printing the July 1973 Quarterly
with its many colored prints.
The Association also received an unrestricted gift of $500 from an anony-
mous donor. This grant was applied toward the purchase of a much needed
electric typewriter.
PERSONNEL
During the year Colleen Kain assumed the duties of administrative assist-
ant. She is well known to many members of the Association and replaces
Carleen Pettersen, who has returned to school. Janie Melton joined the staff
in July, 1973, as our bookkeeper. She has been doing yeoman service not
only in keeping our finances straight, but in lending her talents and practi-
cal assistance to other aspects of the office operations. Sherilyn Howell
joined the staff in January as secretary-receptionist. Narcie Crosby, mem-
bership secretary for the past three years, left to take on the sweet burden of
motherhood; Shelley Schleier is now handling memberships. Michael Swin-
ney, our able mail clerk and handyman, moved up several notches on the
seniority ladder as result of these changes.I16
