Veterans of the Texas Revolution at the annual reunion of the Daughters of the
Republic of Texas in Goliad, Texas, on San Jacinto Day, 1906. William P. Zuber,
on the far left, and Alphonso Steele, far right, were at the battle of San Jacinto.
Zuber became known as "the boy who cried to go into battle" because he wept
when ordered to guard the baggage and care for the sick near Harrisburg in-
stead of pursuing Santa Anna with the army. Zuber offered his friend Steele,
who was ordered into battle, all of his money to exchange places. Steele refused
and was wounded in the battle. Courtesy Eugene C. Barker Texas History
