Hotel in Austin, and association members who register for our meeting
will be able to attend any of the commission's sessions. We plan to have a
shuttle between the two meetings. Nineteen eighty-six is Texas's sesqui-
centennial year, and the annual meeting should be a special one be-
cause of that. Meeting with the TIIC will provide association members
with a wide range of sessions to attend. We hope to see you in Austin to
help us celebrate Texas's 150 years of independence.
Victoria College will present the first annual Kathryn O'Connor
Texas History Lecture on January 17, 1986. Archie R McDonald, presi-

Under the guidance of L. Tuffliy Ellis, director of the Texas State His-
torical Association since 1977, the Association has grown and pros-

period the Association's assets have grown from $36o,ooo to over
$2,250,000, thanks to his fund-raising and management skills. Thou-
sands of students and scholars and twenty institutions of higher learn-
ing are involved in the revision of the Handbook of 7exas, a project begun
by Tuffly in 1981. This is certainly one of the largest and most impor-
tant cooperative scholarly efforts in the state's history, and it will result
in a completely new six-volume Handbook in 1995. Tihe new edition will
be the definitive encyclopedia of Texas studies, and is a major aspect of
the Association's conmmemoration of tile sesquit entennial of annexation.
The annual meeting, the Junior I istorian program, our scholarly
publications, and many other Association endeavors have expanded in
