2,381TEXAS FIRST.-Not much significance attaches to first rank in production, as among the States,
because of wide range in size of the commonwealths. As a matter of record, however, Texas ranks first
in the following: Production of petroleum, natural gas, natural gasoline, carbon black, sulphur, cotton,
grain sorghums, spinach, pecans, beef, mutton, wool, mohair and hides. Texas is first also in total area,
total number of domestic animals, cattle, beef cattle, sheep, goats, mules, turkeys. Texas is usually first
in total value of crop, though exceeded by California the last twb years because of drastic cotton acreage
production. Texas was only a shade behind Pennsylvania in total mineral production value according to
the last available report of the Bureau of Mines and will probably exceed that State in the next report.
