large shipments also to Pennsylvania, Massa-
chusetts, Virginia, Michigan, Illinois and
Nebraska. The turkey market is highly sea-
sonal. In 1942, 375 cars moved to market in
November and 203 in December, out of the
total 646.5.
The turkey-raising Industry is widely dis-
tributed throughout the Central and South
Central parts of the state. Cuero, DeWitt
County, is famous for Its annual turkey trot.
It was the first large commercial center.
In recent years, the production of turkey
eggs for the hatcheries of the Northern tur-
key-raising industry has become a source of
considerable revenue to farmers. The produc-
tion of poults from turkey hatchers has also
increased.
Bees-Honey Production.
There were 196,000 bee colonies in Texas
Jan. 1, 1942, according to the United States
Department of Agriculture. At a yield of
24 pounds of honey to the colony the total
production of the state was 4,704,000 pounds.Production of beeswax was 82,000 pounds. No
estimate of value was made by the depart-
ment, but unofficial estimate placed the total
value at $750,000. Figures for the preceding
year, 1941, were 200,000 colonies producing
24 pounds to the colony for a total production
of 4,800,000 pounds. Beeswax production was
76,000 pounds.
The honey-producing industry in Texas has
remained static through a number of years
though there are great potentialities for ex-
pansion. Probably most of the honey produc-
tion of the state comes from the cotton
blossom. The wild flowers that cover the
prairies of the state are also a source of
honey. Best known of Texas honey probably
is that from Uvalde where huajillo, catclaw
and other Southwest Texas plants supply
most of the yield. Uvalde honey has a na-
tional reputation and the industry is centered
in this region. However, there is much com-
mercial production throughout wide areas
of Southwest, Central, West and North Cen-
tral Texas. (See table beginning on page 166.)Texas Livestock and Livestock Products- Table No. I.
