126 TEXAS ALMANAC-1954-1955
Population, Southwestern States, 1950 and 1940
On the following pages are given tne population figures for the four Southwest-
ern States that border Texas-Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico.
Population is given in each instance for the entire state, for counties and for cities
and towns that are classed as "urban places." ("Urban places" under definition of the
Bureau of the Census, as a rule, were places that had 2,500 or more population as of
the census of 1950, though some exceptions were made where peculiar conditions
existed.)
On the following pages county population is given first and city and town popu-
lation second under each of the states. Pdrallel figures show population for 1950
and 1940, with percentage of increase or decrease.
In most instances, counties decreased in population while cities and towns in-
creased. Throughout the Southwest, as in Texas, the drift was from rural to urban
domicile and vocation. (See pp. 124 and 125 for comparative statistics on all states.)
Population of Oklahoma, by Counties, Cities and TownsThe two tables below show (1) population
of counties and (2) population of cities and
towns that are classed as "urban places,"
usually those with 2,500 or more population.
