Cotulla Young Homemakers organization very worthwhile
BY Eddie Ruth Horton
Thirteen conventions
ago a group of young
wives were gathered to-
gether at a State meet-
ing of Young Farmers
of Texas, there because
lheir husbands were
there. Becoming aware of
the futility and waste of
always being there as a
group without a purpose,
they organized as the
Young Homemakers of
Texas, and the group-
has been growing great
guns ever since, with
local chapters of YHT
throughout Texas. Local
chapters are organized
into Areas and the Areas
comprise the Young
Homemakers of Texas
The Cotulla chapter of
Young Homemakers is in
Area X and was organized
in September of 1971.
under the advisorship of
Mae Kelly. Peggs Hillje
and Sylvia Villarreal are
charter members of the
chapter then begun. In
1972 the Cotulla chap-
ter was voted the Out-
standing New Chapter of
Area X.
The YHT is sponsored
by the Texas Education
Agency in that it is a
take-off of the Future
Homemakers of Ameri-
ca. an organization of
young girls in Home-
making Departments of
high schools. The Agency
provides a supervisor,
currently Nell Smith, an
area advisor and a local
advisor, the Homemaking
teacher who sponsors the
Future Homemakers.
Locally Judy Daugntrey
sponsors the FHA. and at
the same time is advisor
to the Young Home-
makers, thus acting as
laison between the
Agency and the Cotulla
Chapter of Young Home-
makers.

Young Homemakers is
Linda Oltman, while ils
vice president is Dora
Wolfe, its secretary
treasurer is Debbie
Briscoe and Vicki Tiller'
is historian.
The Cotulla Future
Hememakers is the Lit-
tle Sister organization of
the Young Homemakers,
and Jackie Meyer is their
Little Sister for this
year. Their first Little
Sister was Rosie Garcia
for two seasons 1972 and
1973. Little Sister of 1974
was Mary Alice Aguerro
who was also voted that
year’s Outstanding Little
Sister in the Area. Elsa
Rodriguez was their
Little Sister in 1975, with
Jackie the current Lit-
tle Sister and also an
area officer, serving as
treasurer of Area X.
In their Big Sister
capacity the Young Ho-
memakers give aid to the
Future Homemakers as
needed, financially and
otherwise, helping in
their Christmas Pro-
grams and with their
Mother-Daughter ban-
quet held each year near
the end of school. Most
noteworthy of all aid is
the $300 scholarship aw-
arded annually to an
FHA girl and presented
to her at the Mother-
Daughter banquet. Reci-
pients of earlier YHT
scholarship s are Josefa
Valesquez in 1973, Alice
Patterson in 1974 and
Elsa Rodriguez in 1975.
Another area where
Young Homemakers give
aid and encouragement is
with our Senior Citizens.
They are invited to YHT
meetings that might
prove interesting to them
given occasional parties,
and always the Young
Homemakers fete the
Senior Citizens at Ch-
ristmas.
One of the greatest
accomplishements of the
Cotulla Young Home -
makers is that they in-
itiated the La Salle
County Fair, carried it
along until the Fair Board
was organized in 1974,
and since then have been
prime movers within that
Association. Working
with other organizations
their dream is to pur-
chase and build Fair
grounds and a Fair build-
ing of Cotulla’s own.
The Young Home-
makers carry on a
variety of other activi-
ties and programs. They
participate in every
Fourth of July celebra-
tion. They hold interest-
ing fun programs on
such subjects as groom-
ing, sewing, making Ch-
ristmas gifts, needle -
point, and candlemak-
ing.
A recent program was
how to protect aganist
birth defects in infants,
and their next one will
be on defending against
rape. They gave a Salad
Garden to initiate this
year’s program and in
Arpil will not only tour
the historic home of Jon
Cotulla, but have char-
tered a bus for April
19-22 and invited the town
to go with them on their
fabulous “Trip to Nat-
chez.” And in May the
YHT will join the Garden
Club and other organiza-
tions in staging a Bi-
centennial Ball
Any homemaker can
become a member of
the Young Homemakers.
Those under thirty - five
are active members and
hold the offices. Those
over thirty - five are
associate members with
all privileges except off-
ice holding. The majority
of YHT members are
associate members. But
it doesn’t matter if you
are married or single,
man or woman, you may
join the Young Homema-
kers if yon are a home-
maker.
An annual $300 scho-
larship to a deserving
future homemaker, and
beginning and support-
ing our County Fair--
these are marvelous
accomplishments. These
are worthy work.
