PREFACE.
WnLE we have found no difficulty whatever in procuring all the necessary Information we needed
from the different Departments in Washington City, it has been wholly out of our power, since the
late change in our State Government, to obtain even a corrected list of the 1ilitary appointments,
from the Government Departments in Austin, to say nothing of other information we have been in
the habit of receiving from that quarter. Hence our State Statistics, since our Civil Government
has been superseded by Military Rule, are-very meagre, and what we have published is only
what we have been able to obtain from printed circulars and newspaper reports. As a few of
the old officers, elected by the people, have not yet been removed, we have deemed it best to re-
publish the list of County Officers, as well as the judges and officers of the Supreme and District
Courts for 1867, and also to give such a list of Military appointments up to November 7th,1867, as
we have been able to procure. Should we receive any additional names before the issue of our se-
cond edition, we will add them to the Table already published. Our AuArAc for 1868 will be found
to contain a greater variety of matter than any of its predecessors, though we have this year had
more difficulties to contend with than on any previous occasion, both from the unsettled condi-
tion of the country and from the epidemic, which has materially interfered with our business ar-
rangements. Our great object, since we first commenced the issue of this work, eleven years ago,
has been to publish nothing second-hand, but to procure every thing from original and reliable
sources. Our Statistics, with the exception of those referring tothe Military Government of Texas,
have all been submitted to the examination of official parties for revision and correction up to
the latest dates; therefore they may be relied upon as correct, and we have spared no pains or ex-
pense to make then so. For the numerous contributions we have received from all parts of the
country, we tender to our friends our most grateful thanks. Some of those articles came too late
for this year's issue, which we exceedingly regret. Such as will bear keeping till next year will
appear in THE TExAs ALMANAC for 1869, and the rest will be published in the columns of the Galves-
ton News, from time to time, till they have all been disposed of. As the circulation of our AL~
MANAC now extends far beyond the limits of Texas, and is greatly sought after, not only through-
out all the Southern States, but through a Ihrge portion of the West and North, as well as in several
countries in Europe, we have devoted a larger space than usual to descriptions of Texas in detail,
for which we are indebted to several gentlemen, all of whose names are appended to the articles
they have sent us, most of whom have either resided in the districts they descr ibe, or been familiar
with them, from frequent travel, for many years. The article headed "Railroads in Texas, with Glimp-
ses of the Country through which they pass," has been prepared with great care and labor, and
the information it contains will be of immenservalue to those seeking future homes in our
State; while the-Description of Texas, by our friend Henry S. Randall of New-York State, who has
been a contributor to our ALMANAC for many years, is a most comprehensive statement of all the im-
migrant is most desirous to learn. To meet the yearly increasing demand for THE TEXAS ALxANAC,
we now stereotype every issue, so that we can'supply any amount we may have demand for, and
those ordering large quantities, to aid in promoting immigration to Texas, will be liberally dealt
with.
