POPULATION STATISTICS.
M1ap above shows Texas center of gravity of population, 1880-1920.
The center of gravity of population in the United States in 1920 was 1.9
miles west of Whitehall, Owen County, Indiana.
POPULATION STATISTICSTexas with its 4,663,228 population
ranked fifth among the States ac-
cording to the report of the United
States Bureau of the Census in 1920.
On a basis of population to the
square mile, 'however, Texas ranked
thirty-fifth, with only 17.8 residents
for each square mile of territory.
On a basis of total population, Mis-
souri ranks just below Texas, in
sixth place; but when Texas reaches
the present density of population of
Missouri, it will have 12,917,000
population. Texas area and re-
sources are sufficient to care for a
population of 25,000,000 or 30,000,000.
Texas Population, 1926.
Based on rate of growth, 1910-
1920, Texas population should be
about 5,220,000 in 1926. Consider-
ing the rapid expansion of the
larger cities and rapid settlement
of the Plains and certain parts of
Southwest Texas, however, it seems
that an estimate of 5,400,000 would
be conservative.
Population Prior to 1845.
Early estimates of the population
of Texas are indefinite. In Yoak-
um's history it is stated that the
population of the State was prob-
ably about 1,500 in 1744. At this
time the population was centered
largely about San Antonio, though
there had been a few small settle-
ments in East Texas near Nacog-
doches. These estimates, of course,
include all European, Mexican and
American settlers.
Yoakum estimates the population
of Texas at 7,000 in 1806, and it was
not much greater fifteen years later
,when Stephen F. Austin founded his
colony on the banks of the Brazos.
The era of colonization of the pe-
riod 1821-35 brought many settlers
to the State. In 1831 Yoakum esti-
mates the population at 20.000. The
vote for the first President of the
Republic in 1836 would indicate a
population of about 50,000, and the
vote of 1845, the last year of theRepublic, indicated a population of
approximately 125,000. A partial
enumeration was made in 1847,
showing 135,000 population, of
which 39,000 were slaves.
