ampton, Mass. Was born in Plymouth,
Vt., July 4, 1872; lawyer; A. B., Amherst
College, 1895; LL. D., Amherst College,
1919; Massachusetts House of Representa-
t.Lves, 1907-08; Mayor of Northampton,
1'910-11; Massachusetts Senate, 1912-15;
president of the Senate, 1914-15; Lieuten-
ant Governor of Massachusetts, 1916-18;
Governor of Massachusetts, 1919-20. Was
mar ed on Oct. 4, 1905, to Miss Grace A.
Goodhue, and has one son, one having died
in 1924. Nominated by the Republican
party for Vice President in 1920, and
elected on Nov. 2, 1920. On the death,
Aug. 2, 1923, of President Warren G.
Harding, succeeded to presidency, to which
office he was sworn in on Aug. 3, 1923.
Nominated for presidency by Republican
party in national convention, 1924, and re-
elected President Nov. 4, 1924.

married Caro D. Btymyer of Cincinnati,
1889. Admitted to bar 1886, practiced at
Lincoln, Neb, 1887-94. Since then interest-
ed in gas business in Illinois, Wisconsin
and Washmington Comptroller of Currency,
1897-1902, president and chairman of
board of Central Trust Company of Chica-
go since 1902. Commr. Maj. Engineers,
N. A., June, 1917; Lieut. Col., July, 1917;
Col., Jan., 1918; Brig. Gen., Oct., 1918. Was
named on A'm. staff of commander in
chief, A. E. F., Sept., 1917. Held several
important administrative positions with
army and was cited by U. S., France and
Belgium Was named director of Federal
budget system, 1921; was appointed by
Reparati ns Com. as Pres. Com. to investi-
gate possibilities of German budget, 1923.
