82 THE TEXAS ALMANAC.
ELECTION RESULTS, 1926.Tables on following pages give totals.
also county-by-county figures, for the
Democratic primary elections of 1926.
Totals are given also for the Republican
primary and for the general election, Nov.
2, as canvassed by the State Canvassing
Board in December. County vote is given
for contested Democratic elections in Con-
gressional and Supreme Judicial Districts.
A summary of 1924 elections is gi en also.
Election laws of Texas require a second
or run-off primary election to be held to
decide all races in which no candidate
received a majority of the total vote in
the first primary. The first primary was
held July 24, 1926, and there were eleven
State offices represented on the Demo-
cratic ballot: Governor, Lieutenant Gov-
ernor, Treasurer, Comptroller, Railroad
Commissioner, Attorney General, Super-
intendent of Public Instruction, Commis-
sioner of the General Land Office, Com-
missioner of- Agriculture, Judge in Court
of Criminal Appeals, and Associate Jus-
tice in the Supreme Court. There was
only one candidate each standing for
Comptroller, Lieutenant Governor and As-
sociate Justice in the Supreme Court.
The other eight offices were contested.
All races vere decided by majorities in
the first primary with three exceptions:
Governor, Attorney General and Treasur-
er the second primary election of Aug.
28 being necessary to decide these races.
VWhere no candidate receives a majority
in the first election, the law provides that
the two receiving highest and next high-
est votes shall run in the second primary.
Ioody's Plurality in First Primary.
In the race for Governor, the first pri-
mary failed by a very slight margin to
provide Moody with a majority. There
was, in fact, some discussion as to
whether Moody had not actually received
a majority and whether he should have
been called upon to make a second race.
In view of this, the following figures are
presented: The official canvass by the
State Democratic Executive Committee
gave Mpody a total of 409.7-32, and his
opposition a total of 411,502. This does
not include Edwards and Gray Counties,
which did not report to the executive
committee. Accepting the unofficial re-
urns of these two counties to the Texas
Election.Bureau, it is found that in Ed-
wards County Moody received 103 votes
and his opposition 151; in Gray County
Moody received 591 votes and the oppo-
sition 651 Adding these to the official
canvass, the totals stand: Moody, 410,426;
opposition, 412,304. This left Moody 1,878
short of the opposition's vote, or 1,879
short of a majority.
District Election.
Returns by counties 'for elections of
Congressmen and Justices in Courts ofCivil Appeals will be found on pages
county tables on State elections.
