A HISTORY OF TYLER AND SMITH COUNTY, TEXAS
Transportation Department wagons, harness, and other articles
were made for transporting supplies to the Confederate Army.
There were a dozen or more houses composing this Department,
and it formed a small town called "Kirbyville," named after
Colonel Kirby, who had charge of this Department.
Other Important Parts That Tyler Played During the Civil
War.56
LECAUSE of gunboats being stationed all
along the Mississippi River after the battle of Vicksburg, the
banks of the Mississippi were patroled by federal troops, who
made it dangerous for anyone to cross this river. This maneuver
cut the Confederate Army in two, and Tyler was selected as
general headquarters of the Trans-Mississippi Department of the
Southern Confederacy. General Kirby Smith was in command of
the Confederate army west of the Mississippi River. Colonel Allen
had charge of Camp Ford; Colonel Hill had supervision over
the arms factory; Colonel Kirby, as stated, had charge of the
Transportation Department, and Dr. Johnson had charge of the
Medical Department.57

2HE cemetery for federal prisoners who died
at Camp Ford was situated about seventy-five to one hundred
yards west of the southwest corner of the Camp Ford enclosure.
After the War had ended, all of the bodies of Union soldiers
were exhumed by the government and buried in other locali-
ties.
