Perryton seeks federal
public works funds
An application for federal
grants under Title 9 of the
federal Public Works and
Economic Development Act has
been filed by the City of
Perryton and Ochiltree County,
with the Perryton Chamber of
Commerce acting as the
coordinating agent, according
to The Perryton Herald.
City and county each seek
$300,000 in federal funds to be
used to create jobs and perform
public improvement projects.
To qualify under Title 9, a
community must suffer a
drastic change in the economic
condition of its area. Basis for
the Perryton and Ochiltree
county applications is. appar
ently, the bankruptcy filings
last month by Wheatheart Inc..
and American Grain & Cattle
Co.
The City of Perryton plans to
use the money to provide
employment in various pro
jects, including cleaning up of
blighted areas, tearing down
buildings and hauling off junk,
improving drainage facilities,
making street repairs, and
up grading city parks.
Ochiltree County plans to use
the federal grant to dredge
Lake Fryer, removing the silt
which has washed into the lake,
and improving the surrounding
recreation area.
The two projects, according
to the Perryton newspaper,
would probably employ fifty
to 60 people.
The city has already started
some federal programs, the
newspaper reports. An appli-
cation was filed through the
Manpower Program which
makes funds available for the
employment of persons in the
area who have been unemploy-
ed for seven days. The
government pays $2.10 per
hour for this type of
employment, with the rest
being paid by the employer.
The EDA (Economic Devel-
opment Act) has Title 9 funds
available in the amount of
$38,750,000. The Title 9
program is not for communities
affected by a general or
national economic condition,
but for those suffering from
local problems.
