books.
One might say that the Bible rooms by Mesdames J. T. Davis,
is the word of God. But Jesus
Chr.st is the word and the Bible
is the expression of the word of
Christ. John 1-1, “In the be-
ginning was the word and the
word was with God and the word
was God. 14th the word became
flesh and dweiletn among us as
the only begotten of the Father. ”
Then sin is being contrary to or
with law and law is right princi-
ple. Then sin is contrary to
right principle.
Now a few suggestions as to
the effect of sin. In numerous
magazines of 1914 I get that in
that year there were two billion
eight hundred million dollars
spent in the United States'for
whiskey and tobacco. Suppose
that this weate, (and I think
waste is is wrong) had been
spent in lands at $50 per acre
and give eace man 80 acres it
would have given homes to over
eight thousand families.
In the year 1914 the Anti Sa-
loon league gave out the intalli-
gence that there were one hund-
red and fifty thousand men died
that year from the effect of
whiskey.
Mr. Churchhill, the rescue|
man gave out that in 1914 there
were six hundred thousand fal-
len women in the United States.
Ninety two per cent of these
gave as the cause of their fall
the dance and whiskey.
Once they were as pure
snow, but they fell,
Fell like a snow flake from heav-
en to hell,
Fell to be cast on the horrible
street,
Fell to be scoffed at, spit on and
beat.
Oh! merciful God, they have
fallen so low
And once were pure as the
beautiful snow,
All because of sin,—L. B. Con-
nell.
Is a reasonable question, and( one that should be
looked squarely in the face at the beginning of the
New Year.

In previous studies I have, at
least to my satisfaction, proven
that man does not believe in God
and does not love God, and that
♦
man does not believe in man nor
love man.
Now the failure to love and
believe in God and man is the re-
sult of a condition in the heart
of men, and that condition is sin.
One might ask. what is sin?
Paul said that sin is transgres-
sion of the law. The word trans-
gression means crosswise. So
sin is crosswise or contrary to
law.
What is law? One might say
that law is an established code
to govern conduct. To illustrate,
I go into a law office and see a
lot of books, they tell me that
that is the law- But law is prin-
ciple-or character and< the ex-
pression of the principle in man
is the things written in the
Chicago, Ill., Feb. 5.—A busi-
ness revival which will shortly
Testore general prosperity and
give employment to thousands of
workers now unimyloyed is now
on throughout the country,
•James Simpson, general mana-
ger of Marshall Field &Co.,
largest dry goods dealers in the
world, said in an interview here
tonight.’
Simpson expressed the belief
that prices to the retailer and
consumer have struck the bot-1
tom.
Country merchants, he said,
have already started to buy
heavily in expectation of a busy '
spring season.
If retail distribution continues
at its present rate there is no
question but that the textile
mills of the country will be oper-
ating to capacity in a short
time, a condition which will ma-
terially aid in restoring general
prosperity, said Mr. Simpson.,,
He said that the month of Jan-
uary showed excellent distribu-
tion of surplus stocks held by re-
tailersjn all parts of the coun-
try.
/ This was backed up, he said,
by the/ increased number of or-
ders which have been-7 received
during the month and by the
large number of retailers who
have visited wholesale houses.
Our own textile manufactur-
ing plants are operating to ca-
pacity and indications are that
they will continue to do so
throughout the year, he said.—
