cr The SeasonQ
HE baseball season this year had a little better record to show than it did last
year. The season was very interesting and wound up in a most successful and
gratifying way. The prospects of the team were not very much at the beginning,
but by taking the new material and handling it in the right way Coach Raborn made
a most excellent team.
The team chose the name of "Seagulls" and together with the new suits which
they received, they were helped along a great deal as far as the spirits of the team was
concerned.
The 1915 season started and finished strong. The first game to be played was
with the Orange High School at Orange. The Seagulls knocked two pitchers out of
the box and the game ended with a score of 16 to 6.
The "Seagulls"'' next trip was to South Park. This game was much closer than
the Orange game, ending in the score of 2 to 1 in favor of Port Arthur. The. features of
the game was the home run made by Ray Jordan which saved the day for Port Arthur.
The third game which was played in Beaumont against Beaumont High took a
little pep out of the "Seagulls," because they were defeated by a score of 12 to 4.
The fourth game also brought a defeat to the "Seagulls," but this time it was
due to the little better ability of the Houston team. The game was the hardest the
team ever came across but they fought to the very end. The contest was the best of
the season and everybody that saw it was glad that they were present. At the end
of the ninth inning the score was 0 to 0 and then the battle began. Houston had to
put in a new pitcher and then it was not until the fourteenth inning that Houston
succeeded in putting a couple across home base. Thus the game ended with a score
of 3 to 1.
The return game with Beaumont added a little to the "Seagulls" percentage,
after they put the visiting team aside with a score of 8 to 7.
The last game of the season was with South Park on the home grounds. The
"Seagulls" succeeded in taking ten hits from the visiting pitcher, while Thomas, the
famous "Seagull" pitcher gave the visitors seven, but he was particular about keep-
ing them scattered so that they didn't amount to much in the end. The score was 5
to 2 at the close of the game, in favor of the "''Seagulls."
Several other nice practice games were played during the season and the
"Seagulls" took all but one of them. At close of the season the "Seagulls" had a
percentage of .667 to their credit. Next season the line-up will be practically the
same as this year and a still better record is sure to be made, which will make the
"Seagulls" Texas champions.
