The Art Department
THE work of the Art Department this year, following its two broad aims
of developing students along cultural and industrial lines, has been almost
equally divided as usual, between applied design and free-hand drawing.
Each member of each class has made original designs and carried out these
designs in various materials, such as block printing and stenciling of cloth, and the
enameling of wood and metal. Leather has been introduced this year in the more
advanced classes. The craft of bookbinding is practiced by each class in a graded
course, and each student likewise does one problem in basketry.
Free-hand drawing, including work from casts, in charcoal, from living mod-
els in chalks, charcoal and water colors, and from still life fruits and flowers
alternates with the construction work. Posters have been made again for vari-
ous school activities.
An elementary course in interior decoration has been added to the work of
the most advanced class. This deals with the principles underlying taste and judg-
ment in the planning of a home, some study of period furnishings, and finally, the
drawing to scale of the different elevations of a room, the choice of color schemes,
the securing of harmonious backgrounds, and the selection of its furnishings.
The course in art history and appreciation has come to have a vital place in
this year's work. A new topic is assigned for each six weeks, and students pre-
pare papers on it. It is hoped that as time goes on this phase of High School work
will be more and more emphasized. H. M. W.59
