Four-Year
Bill Sets
The Tarleton State College pro-
posed four-year status bill, placed
spring, was put in a new lig'ht last
before the- state legislature last
week iii a public report by the
Commission on Higher. Education,
Ralph Green, director of the
commission, promised that his
group will make positive recom-
mendations on the elevation of
Tarleton. State College and two
other junior colleges to four-year
status at the 1959 session of the
Texas Legislature.
Green said that basic informa-
tion concerning four-year status
for Tarleton, Arlington State, and
Del Mar College was not available
at the "time; requests given to the
Legislature. He said that now th<3
commission has statistics on which
to formulate decisions and it will
hot hesitate to make definite sug-
gestions of a very positive nature.
Green reviewed the data assemb^
led in slightly more than two years
of study, and promised to have a
formula for making college ap-
propriations ready for recommen-
dation by the next meeting of the
commission in Denton Feb. 10.
-TSC Judging Team
Will Participate
■ In Ft. Worth Show
The Tarfeton State College Live-
stock Judging Team will represent
TSC Monday at the Fort Worth
Fat Stock Show.
Members of the team include
Doyle Pruitt from Mineral Wells,
Don Brandenberger, San Saba;
Durwin Hill, San Saba; Carroll
Haygood, Kaufman, and Neal
Flathers from Perryton.
They will compete against teams
from Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado,
and Louisiana, according to Pro-
: fessor W, W. Reed, head of the
a.nimal husbandry department at
Tarleton.
''Competition for places on the
team has been spirited," says Mr.
Reed, "and we congratulate the
men winning those places." Forty-

Registration at Tarleton State College for the second, semester
is slated to begin Monday, Feb. S, at 8 a.m.
It will be held in the Administration Building until 5 p.m.

for holding its annual Mothei-

Dormitory residents at Tarleton
State College average making bet-
ter grades than non-resident stu-
dents who live off-campus.
This was revealed in a recent
study conducted by the Registrar's
Offic-j.
The study drew a comparison of
the number of dormitory and off-
campus residents in pi-oportion to
the nine-week honor roll and the
nine-week probation list.
A total of 4.74 per cent of the
dormitory students were listed on
the honor roll while only 3.33
per cent of off-campus non-resi-
dent students were on this list.
The other comparison showed on-
ly 15.42 per cent of dormitory resi-
dents on the probation list compar-
ed to 25.15 per cent of non-resident
off-campus students. '
Daughter tea Feb 11 from 3-5 p. m.
Purpose of the tea is to interest
girls of the surrounding area in
coming to TSC. Originating in
1950, the tea's first guests were
Tarleton co-eds and their mothers
along with girls and their mother,)
from Stephenvile. This year girls
from a 50-mile radius around S'te.
phenville will be invited.
Towns in the 50-mile radius in-
clude Stephenville, Tolar, Gran-
bury, Justin, Comanche, Dublin,
Mingus, Carbon, Meridian, Gor-
don, Ilico, Desdemona, De Leon,
Hamilton, Carlton, Iredell, Santo,
Glen Rose, Lipan, Gorman, Lingle-
ville, Mineral Wells, Weatherford,
Cross Plains, Rising Star, and
Eastland.
The group will bo received in
the parlor of the girls' dormitory,
guided through the dormitory, the
fine arts building, and taken on a
four of the campus, with members
of the Campus Club meeting them
at each building.
Baylor Sympony Orchestra
Concert Set for February 4
The Baylor University Sym-
phony Orchestra will appear in
concert 'Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 8
p.nu in the Tarleton State College
Auditorium under the sponsorship
of the Tarleton Civic Series.
The symphonic ensemble is com-
prised of students of the School
of Music of Baylor University with
artist-members of the music fac-
ulty in key .places.
The Orchestra was founded in
1944 by the Dean of the School of
Music and musical directors of
the orchestra.
Lino Bartoli is concertmaster of
the Orchestra. A distinguished
concert violinist, Mr.-Bartoli had
his training with the celebrated
Belgian violinist, Caesar Thomson.
He held a number, of. important
: positions, prior to his joining the
faculty of the, School of Music at
Baylor, including the assistant
concertmastership of the Pitts-
burgh Symphony Orchestra.
Other important string positions
are fill'd bv Miss Patricia Navlor,
Eastman School of Music gradu-
ate and principal of the second
■violin section, Miss Mary Ellen
Proudfit, graduate of the Ameri-
can Conservatory in 'Chicago anil
principal violist, Nadine Derby,
solo cellist and Bernard Ackert,
principal string bass.
Noah Knepper, noted woodwind
recitalist is principal oboist of
the Orchestra. Mr, ICnepper will
also he heard as soloist in a con-
certo for oboe and strings by Tele-
rnan.
The program will open with the
Overture of The Bartered Bride
by Smetana and close with the
Overture-Fantasy "Romeo and Ju-
liet" by Tchaikowsky.
JERRY BLACK
. . . receives appointment
Jerry Black, a J-TAC sports
porter and journalism student,
was named last week by Con-
gressman Omar Burleson as an
appointee to the U. S. Naval
Academy at Annapolis.
Black, 20, is a senior at Tarle-
ton State College. He was one
of three West TexaiijS to receive
appointments.

Students Can Get
Counseling Before
Registration
Tarleton State students expect-
ing to enroll for the spring semes-
ter were asked this week t osee
their counselors before registra-
tion. The pre-registration counsel-
ing was urged to avoid last minute
complications in the registration
schedule.
Dr. Dick Smith, head of the
Tarleton social sciences division,
stated that he would be in his of-
fice the following hours to talk
with students concerning the next
semester's course's:

Numbers will be issued at the.
west door to those applying for
registration. Students will wait in
the Recreation Hall and will be
called in groups as needed.
Students will present fee receipt
and entrance card, if new student,
in the lobby of the Registrar's of-
fice.
Students. should complete alt
forms requested in the registrar's
office and immediately proceed to
counselor. All male students pro-
ceed to room 207, Administration
Building, for consultation and ad-
visement concerning ROTC. After
counseling, students proceed to de-
partments for sectionizing.
Students should go next to their
division heads. After the confer-
ence, the assignment card, one sell,
edule card, and the- entrance card
are left at the final checking table
on the second floor at the west
stairway. Registration is complet-
ed when schetlule cards are pre-
sented at the College Store and
books and supplies are received.
Classes begin Tuesday, Feb. 4,'at
8 a.m.
Spring Graduates
Should Obtain
Clearance Cards
Students who will graduate this
semester should pick up a Clear-
ance cai'd in the Registrar's office
on or before Friday.
Students who plan to withdraw
from Tarleton State College at the
conclusion of this semester should
pick up their clearance card some-
time this week or next.
Stuart Chilton, Registrar, said
that is important that students
do t his before departing for their
homes or other colleges so that
their records will be officially
cleared at Tarleton State.
Canterbury Association to
Sponsor Mardi Gras Ball
The Mardi Gras Ball is slated
for Saturday, February 8, at 8
p.m. in the Tarleton State College
Recreation Hall.
The dance is being sponsored
by ths Canterbury Association, un-
der the direction of the Very Rev.
Russell Clapp.
The Mardi Gras Ball will be a
formal, no-flowers affair. Every-
one attending will be masked ac-
cording' to th.' Mardi Gras tradi-
tion, Decorations will follow on
a small scale those-found in New
Orleans at Mardi Gras time.
Elizabeth Tocher of Meridian,
Canturbury Association member,
says the Ball will follow tradition
as far as unmasking at a given
hour and throwing confetti.
Chairmen who are planning the
dance, assisted by their - commit-
tees are; decorations, Jeanne Hat-
zenbuehler of Dallas; refresh-
ments, Elizabeth Tocher; music
and entertainment, Tom Slaughter
of Bellaire; and advertisement,
Bob Ashmead of Jacksonville,
Florida, and Jeanne Hatzenbueh-
ltr.
New Catalog Set
For Spring Issue
Tarleton State's new catalog will
be issued in the spring, dated April
15. Stuart Chilton, registrar, said
that the Tarleton catalog will be
published annually, rather than
every two years as was done in
the past.
Mr. Chilton went to A&M last
wek on business concerning publi-
cation of the catalog. He held con-
ferences with Registrar H. L,
Heaton; officials of the A&M Col-
lege Press, who are printing the
publication, and J. J. Woolker,
foreign student adviser.
The new catalog will begin with
the summer session of 1958 and
cover the regular session of
1958-59.
