For the first time in the
history of Tarletnn State
College girls can legally and
with the full approval of the
college officials live off
campus. This rule was
passed in the fall of 1969
and went into effect in the
spring semester of1970. The
rule stated that all females
21 years or older and/or
seniors can live off campus
in any approved housing of
their choice.
Since this is the first
semester the rule has been
in effect, the J-TAC staff
thought it would be interest-
ing to the college students
as well as college officials
to see how well girls are ad-
justing to the new rule and
if there are more advantages
than disadvantages in living
off campus.
In an interview with
Angie Watts, Kathy Kiker
and Vicki Higgins)( the- ad-
vantages were found to out*
weigh the disadvantages.
These girls live in a mobile
home in the Madrid Trailer
Park and they all think they
have the conveniences of
home.
Angie, a senior history
major from Waco, when asked
her opinion of the new living
conditions, replied, 'The ad-
vantages are so great that I
can't even think of any dis-
advantages. Living off cam-
pus means we don't have
any hours. If we want to
study and then go out we
can. Instead of just going
out to get away from all the
noise, we can come and go
as we please without having
to worry about hours. We
also have more privacy so it.
is easier to study. People
aren't just dropping by all
the time to visit. We know
when people come over there
is a reason rather than just
a place to stop by and talk.'
Kathy, a senior physical
education major from Beau-
mont, thought that by living
off campus without dorm
rules or hours, girls can
have a chance to become
more responsible. When
asked to explain, she Replied,
'When students are sub-
jected to hours pod rules
that everyone must abide
by, then there is really no
chance to make your own de-
cisions. Decisions about the
time needed to study or "what
time a date should leave. In
fact, over here, we usually
come in earlier than we did
in the Chateau, Now we
know that our dates can come
in and stay awhile and visit
with our friends and their
dates without anyone impos-
ing rules about the time to
leave.*
All three of the girls
impressed the point that
hours were not the only ad-
vantage, Vicki, a senior
elementary education major
from Lampasas, answered
■ the question of advantages,
of living off campus by re-
plying, 'Not only do we have
better living conditions, but
we are saving money. By
having a washer and dryer
in the mobile home, we all
have saved two to three
dollars a week just on laun-
dry, Also we save money by
not having to go out to see
our dates. For a large part
of* the time, we stay here
and watch television and
;his saves money for our
dates. Because we all tire

here, we act more as a group
now than ever before. We
all do things together rather
than have individual plans.
I mean we have our dates
over for supper and every-
one stays and watches t.v.
rather than going to the
movie,'
Of course, the condi-
tions are not all good, but
all three agreed that the
problems students face off
campus are the same on cam-
pus. There is always the
problem of not having trans-
portation to campus. But
since all three of the girls
have their cars, this is no
problem for them. When this
was brought to their atten-
tion, Angie replied, 'But
just think, we never have a
parking problem at the trailer
because we have the whole
lot to find a parking space,
which is a little different
from the Chateau.'
Another disadvantage
is that now they have to
worry about new problems,
such as plumbing and having
to fix everything themselves
is something is broken. Also
they agreed that a new pro-
blem for them was that they
did not really know their
neighbors so it is rather
hard to borrow from them.
Since the trailer has
three bedrooms, each girl
has her own bedroom and
there is no complaining
about who will clean the
room. ' :
Another" real advan-
tage for Vicki and Angie in
their living off campus is
the fact that they can leave
at all hours of the night or
day for rodeos which will be-
gin this spring. Since both
are on the rodeo team, they
can also work their horses
whenever they need to with-
out worry about the time in-
volved.
By this interview alone,
girls living off campus seem
to enjoy these new rules
which allow for more indi-
vidual responsibility and
freedom in making decisions
for themselves. Of course
there are problems, but life
on campus has its problems
too, and these girls all
agreed that they have learned
more with regard to responsi-
bility since they moved off
campus.
