Improvement Project for Memorial Stadium Approved
A special committee of the
Tarleton Alumni Association has
approved a.$266,000 improvement
project for Tarleton State
University's Memorial Stadium,
The committee, appointed by
Alumni Association president Jerry
Golden, met Jan. 19 to hear details
of the proposed project, the
estimated cost, and the proposed
means of raising the funds. After a
presentation by Stephenville Mayor
Don Jones, former president of the
Alumni Association, the committee
voted unanimously to undertake the
project.
Mike Moncrief, Fort Worth, and
Mike Myers, Dallas, are co-chairmen
■ of the committee which includes
--Reuben Friou, Dallas; Ben Barnes,
Brownwood; Tom Hastings, Denton;
Lance Zimmerman, Waco; and Dr.
Vance Terrell and Joseph Chandler,
Stephenville, Golden is an ex-officio
member of the committee.
In presenting the plans for the
renovation project, Jones -reviewed
feriefly the history of Memorial
Stadium pointing out that the initial
-plans were laid in 1946 by a group of
" Tarleton officials and Stephenville
residents. The organization set a goal
of $100,000 for the construction of
a stadium with all-concrete
bleachers, a field house, and an
eight-lane track.
The full amount of the project
was never subscribe^, however, and
the first unit of concrete bleachers
and a field house were constructed
oh the west side of the field and steel
bleachers were erected on the east
side. The 8-lane cinder track was also
constructed.
Jones noted that from 1950 until
1970 no additional construction was
made at the stadium and
maintenance on the existing facilities
was negligible.
In an effort to upgrade the
Tarleton athletic program and
Memorial Stadium, a group of
Stephenville citizens raised
approximately $40,000 in 1970 for
improvements to the stadium. This

money was" used to pave the parking
lots, pave and concrete certain areas
inside the stadium", renovate the field
house and add a training room,
purchase a new scoreboard and
clock, and install chain link fence in
front of the west stands.
In 1971, another drive was
launched to replace the obsolete
lighting system. Approximately
$25,000 was raised for this purpose.
The existing lighting system was
removed from in front of the stands
and metal poles were erected behind
the stands to provide approximately
five times the lighting as the former
system.
Taking the proposed items in the
$266,000 project separately, Jones
explained in detail the improvements
planned for Memorial Stadium. The
project and estimated costs include:
BLEACHERS ($85,000) -
Construct new bleachers over a dirt
berm-type structure on the east side
of the field, and extend the present

of the existing steel bleachers.
Seating on the berm side would be
from 3,000 to 3,500 with seating on
the west side' from 1,500 to 2,000
for a total seating capacity of 4,500
to 5,500.

installed on the berm side and in the
new concrete structures on the west
side of the field. The present wood
seats'in the existing concrete section
on the west side would be replaced
with fiberglass seats.

press box would be located at the
top of the berm on the east side of
the field. The press box would
include facilities for radio stations,
public address announcer, game film
crews, press, scoreboard operators,
scouts, observation rooms for home
and visiting coaches, and a restroom.
FIELD HOUSE ADDITION
($50,000) - A new section for the
field house would be. added under
the new concrete bleachers. The

and coach's dressing room would be

the west side of the stadium and the

project includes $10,000 for

Jones also told the committee that
approximately $140,000 of the
estimated $266,000 was now
available or would be pledged in the
near future.
Dr. John Dunn, chairman of the
Tarleton Athletic Council^ told the
group he felt that design plans and
specifications for the project could
be obtained with little or no cost to
the committee.
Buddy Fornes, athletic director
and head football coach at Tarleton,
told the committee, ".the proposed
