Another large crowd turned
out to watch the livestock

The cowboys did improve
from the Tuesday

outperformed the local
cowboys.
Bryan McCullouch came

baraback riding. In twenty six
attempts only seven riders
outlasted the buzzer.
Dan Webb's first night time
of 9.16 was good enough for
first place money in calf
roping.
Jo Nell Epperson won the
breakaway roping contest with
a time of 4.35 seconds.
Eight contestants competed
in the saddle bronc riding
contest with Mike Billings
being the only contestant able

Residents anxious
to save brick streets
by Lisa Cypert
Many people, including Kay
Walton, are interested in
preserving Stephenville's historic
brick streets. Ms. Walton says she
feels the brick streets "are our
inheritance and they, represent
what little of our heritage is left
here,"
The streets were laid by the
Thurber Construction company in
1929. This is the same company
that laid Camp Bowie Boulevardin
Fort Worth, Incidentally, Fort
Worth's City council recently
voted to preserve Camp Bowie's
bricks instead of overpaving the
boulevard. <
When the Waltons moved to
Stephenville two years ago, one of
the reasons they bought their
present home on Frey Street was
because of the brick street. When
the city proposed to overpave
Frey in September of 1974, the
street residents drew up a petition
tp halt the overpaving. and got
approximately 200 signatures.The
stTeet was overpaved anyway, but
Ms. Walton would like to preserve
the remaining brick streets.
Naturally, there are arguments
for both sides. Some say asphalt is
cheaperand easier to maintain,
than brick and bricks are noisier
and rougher than asphalt. Also
bricks were orginally meant to be
the base.fdr asphalt.
The pro-brick side argues that
bricks are a part of a vanishing
heritage; they're ^eautiful and
loved. The bricks serve as a safety
factor to slow down traffic' in
residential areas. They also require
less repair work.
Ms. Walton says the city
shouldn't be spending money to
overpave the brick streets when
there arechuckholes in the asphalt
in need of repair, as well as a need
for storm gutters.
Ms, Walton says "Now is the
time for people in Stephenville to
be more progressive and to begin
to preserve our heritiage. In fact,
to capitalize on it.
"Look at the examples of
Granbury and Fort Worth. We
have a potentially beautiful town
here. We plan to initiate a
conservation society open to~
anyone interested," she said.,

America
has the best
advertised drug
problem in the
world.
The most popular headache remedies include Excedrin, Empirin,
Anacin, Cope, Vanquish, Bufferin, and Bayer, But if you
knew the truth, those pills might get pretty hard to swallow.
THE COMBINATION DRUGS
According to a recent American Medical Association drug
report, combinations of a.nalgesics (pain relievers) are
"irrational" and "not recommended." That means remedies
like Excedrin. Empirin. and Vanquish.
BUFFERED PREPARATIONS
That same report could find'"no sound basis" for taking
remedies like Bufferin instead of plain aspirin.
ASPIRIN AND CAFFEINE
It also found simple aspirin plus caffeine, which is what Anacin
is, does no more for your headacheMhan plain aspirin,.
BAYER VS. BRAND X \
As for plain aspirin, there is no persuasive scientific evidence
Bayer Aspirin is more effective at relieving headache-
than any other brand It may differ from other brands but that
doesn't mean it works better.
SAVE ON HEADACHES
The major brand remedies cost up to six times more than
ordinary aspirin Partly because vou. have to pay for the
advertising that gets you to buy them, So next time you buy
something for your head, use your head... Buy the least
expensive plain aspirin you ran find.
