Servants? Yes

Public? No sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss? By Karen Hoy

■We lost. They won. How
foolish.to believe that we, mere
citizens, could beat them, city
, politicians, at their own
Words are their tools.
We? They? Beat? Game?
game?
Words such as these imply
competition and strife. Are the
public servants no longer serving
all the people? Remember,
impartiality is the sign of a good
leader.
Leader? Where were the leaders
when their knowledge of laws and
expertice with words was needed?
Many hours, and much energy
could have been saved if only the
County Commissoners were
required to approve the
preliminary work of a petition.
County Commissoners? They
are the governing body that must
accept a petition in order to call
an election.
Why the hesitancy, to call an
election? Money. Elections cost
money. But since wheii is money
more important than tlje rights of
the 'people? • .
Fear of change. Change is good
if it's what the majority of the
people want. Remember/
Stephenville as well as our nation
is based on democracy..
Democracy? Democracy has
something to do with a form of
government that's by the people
for the people and df the people.
Which'means, very .sifnply, that
we, the people, have the final say.
That's ithe clincher: Getting the
"say.
r
The County Commissioner's Court ruled the petitions for a
liquor election invalid due to the use of double negative
wording in the petition. But, as the example shows, there
really is no double negative used.
So why did the Court rule it as such?
It knows if it plays Stephenville politics long enough, the
liquor election will either be called after the students have
gone home for the summer or will never be brought to vote. In
essence, it is denying registered voters of Erath county the
right to vote.
The petitions met all the requirements stated iij the
Alcoholic Beverage Code and in the elections code. There were
more than enough valid signatures, all with correct addresses
and correct registration numbers. The petitions were handed in
15 days early. When the court saw there was no way to get
around that, it grabbed at a straw as a last resort to stall for
time, if not to totally defeat it.
Going one step further, the foundation pf American
democracy is the rule of law chosen by the people that must
live by the law. Yet, the county commissioner's court, after
being elected according to the rule of law, is whoring its
obligation of fairness and objectivity by. making its rule an
arbitrary rule of men.
It s a shame the men in these political positions can't be
farsighted enough to see they have just jepordized their'
political chances...especially those who are running for
re-election May 6. Stephenville is rapidly growing and
changing. New people from all over the state and country are
moving in, bringing with them different, and hopefully better,
ideas of local government. These new people are fast
outnumbering the "good ol' boys" and will soon replace
them...especially with more performances like the one the
^ourt gave Monday night.
FOR (A FAVOR DE)
It was such a lovely day that I thought I'd, take a walk
through one of my favorite fields. I donned my' sneakers and
jeans, got my dog. Bo, and took off!
The flowers covered the field. It was so beautiful and spring
like and warm in the sunshine that I thought it would be fun
to go wading for awhile. So, I headed toward the stream.
I couldn't believe my eyes when 1 saw the cutest family of
irrelevants go by. I had forgotten how they came out in droves
during the spring. They act like the whole world belongs to,
nothing but irrelevants.
They meander around bushes and rocks, stopping to sniff
ocqassionally at the ground. Almost blind, they often stop
short of runrimg right into trees and fences. Whenever they run
into something unpleasant, they give such a funny grunt and
turn tail to run that it is almost comical.
So, when the whole fapiily I was watching started grunting and running away, I walked over to
where they had been. There lie the biggest dead giveaway I'd ever se$n! It hadn't been dead long
because the lying discrepancies weren't anywhere'around. . .yet.
Lying discrepancies. Have you ever seen one? They're almost as terrible as the mangled meanings.
• Both are definite things to watch out for while walking through a field.
Lying discrepancies sneak up on you, slithering through the grass, their long sharp fangs gleaming
in the sun. One swift pounce and they've got you. The only known warning they give is a chuckle
right before the pounCe.
Of course .you know that the only thing worse than a lying discrepancy is a mangled meaning.
They look slower than molasses in a blizzard, all big and bulky like. But, their size is deceptive. The
fact that they oqly'have three legs also leads you to the conclusion that they are totally harmless
(except for their smell which can knock you out 100 yards away).
However, don't ever let them fool you. From a standing position they can clear 20 feet in one
bound, landing on their victim before he can start yelling. v
They not only feed on dead givaways and unsuspecting strollers, but their absolute favorite food
is dangling participles. Most people think that these poor animals of flight are so dumb and trusting
that anyone can walk up to them.
However, that isn t true at all. When they land in a tree or bush, they make their talons into a
circle and just swoop down until they are actually dangling upside down from the tree limb. So,
whenever they spy someone approaching, they have trouble swinging themselves back to an upright
position in time to fly away.
Their biggest and1 most effective defense is the ability to throw their voice and mimic the sound
of an on-rushing bull. This, naturally, sends their pursurer tearing out of the field faster than a fire
truck on greased rollerskates., >'
But, Bo and I were fortunate. The worst thing we saw on our walk was the dead giveaway. We
thoroughly enjoyed our wade in .the stream and our walk in the field.
It was just enough of a break so that I could come back to this office sane and coherent and get
another paper out once again.'

The crampus news said they
were, on their way back from
Mingns when they had a, one
vehicle accident. The driver of the
pick-up wasn't hurt badly; the girl
di'ed later in the hospital.
These.' three incidents _took
place within the last three years
and have two things in common;
one, they happened to Tarleton
studSnts;'two, the students were
drinking.
It is not my intention to take
sides in the wet-dry issu<j. My
object is to say this, sex and
alcohol are two GOOD gifts God
has given to man. He has also told
us how to use them in ways that
are joyful and loving. You can get
alo't more pleasure from
something when you know what
it is and how to use it. ,
