■ !
and Dr. Joe Christopher
presented papers to
different sections of the
meeting.
Martin's paper was
entitled "Modern Family
Forms on the
Contemporary Texas
Stage," He presented it to
the Modern drama
division. This subject was
an outgrowth of a study
he was engaged in this past
year.
In his classes at TSU,
Martin emphasizes the
relationship between
important drama and real
life in a given society.
Martin said, "Both
modern playwrights and
the 1980 White House
Conference on the Family
attest to family being a.
pressure point in society,
but only drama allows us
to experience the forces at
work in a meaningful
symbolic form.
He said that the £aper
gave him a chance to call
attention to quality
modern drama written in
Texas that is insufficiently
known.
Christopher read a
paper to the Christianity
and Literature division.
The paper was entitled,
"The Complexity of 'The
Nine Tailors'," It was an
analysis of a mystery novel
by Dorothy L. Sayer.
During this special
interest division on
Christianity and Literature
Christopher was elected an
officer for next year's
meeting. He will be
secretary of the session
next year in Fort Worth
and chairman the year
after in Biloxi, Miss.
Christopher has also
recently had four book
reviews published in
"Choice", a librarian's
magazine.
In the September issue
he reviewed Edward
Margolies, "Which Way
Did He Go?: The Private
Eye in Dashiell Hammett,
Raymond Chandler,
Chester Himes, and Ross
MacDonald."
In the October issue he
reviewed George N.
Dove's, "The Police
Procedural"; David
Geherin, "John D.
MacDonald"; and Ina Rae
Hark, "Eward Lear."
