Physically challenged students Psycle their way to good health
By Kisty Hoffman
Managing Editor '
What would you do if suddenly
you were unable to exercise your
body? Would you accept the fact
that you are immobile, or would
you face the obstacle of being par-
alyzed and look for alternatives to
exercising?
Fortunately, most of us only
face something so life-changing in
our imaginations, but for Blaine
Manigold, Marcus Edwards and
other physically handicapped indi-
viduals, immobility was a reality
until Tarleton was given the Psycle
program.
The Psycle, a mobility machine
designed for paralyzed individuals
to physically train, allows the indi-
vidual to sit in a recumbent posi-
tion and move their legs in a
cycling motion. Tarleton is the
only university in the country to
have such a program.
Physical education major Blaine
Manigold thought his dream of
being a coach for intercollegiate
sports was hopeless after he was
paralyzed in a rodeo accident two
years ago. Now he is a quadripleg-
ic. The injury not only hurt him
physically, but emotionally as well,
he said.
"When a person fatigues their
body, it helps with depression," he
said. "I used to look forward to
working out, now I still have that,"
he added.
It didn't take Manigold long to
realize he could hold on to his
dreams even with his handicap.
With the help of the Psycle pro-
gram, he can make those dreams
happen.
"Health and physical fitness are
a big part of my life. Being able to
continue after being hurt is impor-
tant to me," he said.

Jessica Grimm, a 16-year-old junior
at Weatherford High School, works
out on the Psycle while her moth-
•er, Carla Bandera, cheers her on.
Grimm is a quadriplegic and has
been exercising on the psycle for
nearly a year now.
TWo years ago a friend of Grimm's
was driving her home after school,
and they had an accident which
led to Grimm's injury. Despite her
ill fate, Grimm continues to travel
to Stephenville twice each week to
strengthen her muscles and
improve her cardiovascular health
on the Psycle.
"I can tell I'm a lot stronger
already, and I haven't been sick as
much," she said.
After she graduates from high
school, Grimm said she is consid-
ering going to Tarleton to study
math and continue her workouts
on the Psycle.
Grimm is one of the 17 physically
handicapped individuals that work
out in the lab.

Cheerleading tryouts on
Saturday, register Friday
On Friday and Saturday Tarleton will hold cheer-
leader tryouts. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. on
Friday for the cheerleaders. At 5:30 p.m. students
will learn the tryout cheer, the fight song and the
girls will learn a dance,
The cheerleaders will be divided up into groups,
and rotate between the various workout stations. At 9
a.m. oa the following Saturday there will be a review
of the tryout cheer, and tryouts will begin at 3 p.m.
and last approximately 2 hours. Two regional judges
out of Dallas will judge the cheerleaders.
Any student currently enrolled at Tarleton, as well
as incoming freshman, is eligible for the tryouts. The
students must be enrolled for at least 12 hours and
maintain a 2.0 GPA to keep eligibility.
The tryouts are open to the general public.
Younger cheerleaders, including high school and
middle school cheerleaders, are encouraged to attend
to gain the experience of a college level tryout.
Traditionally tryout attendance averages 20 to 25
women, but only 6 to 8 men. Men are encouraged to
try out as Misti Reibock, cheerleading sponsor, said
she is hoping to have more men on the squad next
year.
"We want to get more guys this year," said
Reibock "if they are the least bit athletic and have
the want to, we can work with them,"
Students may pick up a registration packet, which
includes the cheerleader arid registration guidelines,
at registration on Friday,
The students should wear appropriate clothing for
working out. Students are also allowed to bring video
cameras to tape the workout and cheer.
For more information on the tryouts, or to obtain a
registration packet early, contact Reibock at 968-
9755.
Date for nominations nears,
Applications due on Friday
Nomination and application packets for the
Leadership and Service Awards Ceremony are due
tomorrow.
The applications can be turned in at the student
activities office. For more information, call 968-

The Psycle lab has also helped
the mentality of Edwards, a
mechanical engineering major.
Edwards was in an automobile
accident when he volunteered to be
designated driver for two of his
friends.
Edwards was the only one in the
group unaffected by alcohol; how-
ever, after a long day of school and
work, exhaustion got the best of
him. He fell asleep while driving,
and his truck went off the road,
rolled and flipped, throwing him
out. The next thing he remem-
bered, he said, he was bed-ridden
and unable to talk. Like Manigold,
Edwards is now a quadriplegic.
Edwards attended speech thera-
py, but he didn't have enough
physical therapy to help him
because his insurance would not
pay-
He had big plans, to attend col-
lege and have a successful career,
but he was discouraged by his
injury. Joe Priest, director of the
Psycle program, awarded Edwards
a $500 scholarship, so he came to
Tarleton.
"I do feel like I am finally
working toward beating this
thing—trying to go forward instead
of being stuck in one place," he
said. "I'm working toward a point
of health and maybe someday more
independence."
Current students are not the
only ones that utilize the Psycle,
The Psycle is open to Tarleton
alumni and community members
as well.
Psyclers who use the lab relate
to each other, Manigold said. They
all rely on the Psycle for muscle
strengthening and cardiovascular
health.
"There's so few of us on cam-
pus, now we have something in
common to talk about," Manigold
said.
