A major event on any college campus is recruit-
ment for sororities. This is the defining week for more
than 180 girls trying to "Go Greek" at Tarleton.
The three panhellenic sororities — Alpha Gamma
Delta, Delta Zeta, and Phi Mu — have been taking
pictures this week and getting to know one another
at Tuesday night's "Prospective Member Orientation"
and Wednesday nighfs "Philanthropy Night/' where
sororities hosted the potential new members.
At Thursday's "Fun Night/' the women will ex-
plain more about their sororities and sorority life, and
Friday's "Preference Night" is "the most important"
and the girls get all dressed up. It all boils down to
"Bid Day" on Saturday where they find out which so-
rority they have been invited to join.
"Bid day is the day that the girls going through
recruitment find out what sorority picked them," said
Ashlee Watson, Phi Mu director in charge of new mem-
ber education. ""It is supposed to be a surprise for the
new girls, so 1 can't tell you all the details, but 1 can say
that it is going to be so much fun! In the past we have
. gone to the Rangers game and the Fort Worth Zoo,"
"The number of girls that the sororities accept is
based on a formula taken from a percentage of girls
that attend each night," said Delton Gordon, Tarletons
Greek Life Coordinator, "I expect it will be around the
J mid to high 30's this year."
Ashley Jenkins, Vice President of member devel-
opment for Alpha Gamma Delta, recalls her recruiting
experience. "Ifs kind of scary, but once you find that
group you click with you feel a lot more at ease."
Representatives from all the sororities said they
• look for girls who are "outgoing, classy, motivated,
who make good grades and who love Tarleton." Wat-
i son said, "We're looking for someone who fits in with
our sorority but not necessarily fits a certain mold,
j Some of the ladies coming through make the mistake
| of choosing a certain sorority because their friends or
| roommates did, but ifs not about that. Ifs about find-
\ ing a place where you feel comfortable and know
| you're going to enjoy the next 4, 6, or 8 years of your
life/'
