Kevin Sanders steps forward for his solo during "The Kingfish" at last
week's jazz ensemble at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center
Ensemble puts on smooth show

| Thursday Oct. 4, the Tarleton
Jazz Ensemble performed at the
Clyde H, Wells Fine Arts Center
Auditorium. Directed by Greg Ball,
Ensemble I and II had a fantastic
performance.
Ensemble II began at 7:30 p.m.
Ball introduced them and their first
^ong, "Dues Blues." They all played
Very well, but the lack of confidence
i|i the performance showed. Over-
all, it was decent. Some of the fea-
tured soloists included Judson Berry
qn alto saxophone, Chris Reynolds
an tenor saxophone, and Jerry Ru£
sell on trumpet. I was impressed by
ferry's solo in "When Sunny Gets
IJlue." Berry played the solo with
Jase and was able to keep time with
the song. "Sunny" was the best
song from Ensemble II,
Ensemble I took the stage a few
minutes after Ensemble 11. Just
four counts of Ball's waving hand
and they exploded into the open-
ing song, "The Kingfish." Trumpet
soloist Kevin Sanders came to the
front of the stage, put the trumpet
to his lips in one smooth motion
and wailed. His performance made
trumpet playing look easy. Other
soloists included Jordan Jobe and
Ben Wilson on drums, Nick Galanos
on alto saxophone, and featured Dr.
Cara Pollard on trumpet.
My favorite song of the night
was "Festival" performed by En-
semble L "Festival" was a song
that made the audience move to the
rhythm and the drum solos between
Jobe and Wilson were flawless.
Out of the two, Ensemble I
stood out, granted they are the most
experienced. It was good to spend
an evening watching the talent that
inhabits Tarleton.
