AKRON (Spl) — The Firestone
T;re Jk Rubber Co. today pre-
dicted a marked upturn in business
in the months ahead despite slii
drop* in sales and earnings for
the first half of the current fijicai
year.
Company officials reported sales
of $544,872,290' and earnings of
$28.142,824 for the six months end-
ing April 30. These compare with
$381,129,397 in sales and. net in-
come of $30,392,317 during the
same period, a year ago.
The report reflects declines of $.2
per cent in sales and 7.4 per cent
in profits from the all-time record
of last'year.
Earnings on common stock dur-
ing the flrtt half of the current
fiscal yesr amounted to $1.04 per
share compared with $1.12 in the
first six months of 1960. Provision
of $28,250,000 has been made this
year for domestic and foreign
taxes on income compared with
$29.930,000 last year. -
Harvey S. Firestone Jr.. chair-
man of the board and chief ex-
ecutive officer, noted that the
current business recession ap-
parently reached its low point in
March and a steady improvement
is expected the rest of the year.
He also noted that Firestone re-
cently became the first tire manu-
facturer to begin commercial
ureduction o f polybutadiene syn-
thetic rubber with the opening of
a new multi-million dollar plant
at Orange, Tex, producing Dii
rubber.
