SATURDAY 'JAF. 20 1501.
- BRITAIN'S KEW EI2TG.
Edward tlie Seventh the new
rnler of Gi eat Britain and of all
her colonies has lived fifty-nine
years and is a grandfather. He
lias not yet distinguished himself
much beyond setting the fashion
in clothes for the masculine world
patronizing the turf and admiring
pretty actresses. He is described
as being only five and. a half feet
liigh 3et weighs 180 pounds which
is doubtless due to the fact Hie
liis majesty has been obliged to
eat so many swell dinners besides
being an unnusually fine connis-
senr in wines. The Alpine hat
was fathered by him and his title
previous to his accession to the
throne is apparently perpetuated
in the "Prince Albert" coat. Lie
lias a really 'fine taste in dogs and
liorses cigars and champagne but
only passable in regard to actress
es "judging by Mrs. Langtry who
was his pet admiration for so long
King Edward is said to be one of
- the best shots iu England. At
any rate he dotes ou hunting and
what chronicles of royalty's do-
ings would not say he was a good
shot! lie is fond of American
millionaires which may be good
taste or bad according to the class
of millionaire. He also .likes al-
most anybody who happens to
please him and is not generally
hard to please so it may be said
of him that he is good natured.
Iu truth his majesty is quite a
popular man as most any prince
oould be "an he would" though
some people think ho plays cards
and patronizes the races too freely.
The new sovereign possesses light
gray eyes a gray beard a brown
complexion and a bald head none
of which sounds majestic it is true
bfiTt then that is not his fault. He
has small hands jind feet that are
described as neat. The neatness
. doubtless due. to his valet and
-manicure and the lack of greatness
of these extremities i indica-
tion of a similar deiicHLin the
king's head-piece. flRld he
said to his credit that lfft Ed-
ward has never been considered
. priggish. He is well educated
which some kings and princes do
not lake the trouble to be. He
converses fluently in German
French Italian and Russian but
prefers his own mother tongue in
which most Englishmen and
Americans heartily agree with him.
He is the uncle of the Emperor of
liermany but is not unduly puffed
tin over that tact. He does not
care much for pomp ami show and
though his carriages and horse?
have eost him $75000 a year his
- favorite vehicle is a London hai -
som cab. He likes to travel incog
nito to escape public attention and
p trade.
On the whole King Edward the
JSeventh may be summed up as
neither very jioud nor very hatir
He I. is a kind he.irt and a level

The senate has ratified the pur-
chase of the islands of Sibutre and
C'agayan near the Philippine-group
from Spain for $100000.
S. B. Elkins was re-elected U.S.
senator fiom West Virginia.
Both branches of congress adopt-
ed resolutions fif regret for the
death of Queen Victoria. The sec-
retary of the state also cabled
America's sympathy to the king
and many other evidences of sor-
row fertile death of the British
sovereign were given throughout
this country.
do so before his reign is over.
Hitherto he has not had great op-
portunities to do so. As - heir to
the throne his chief object seems
to have been to have a good time
land he had it. On the throne ihere
will be more scope for brilliancy
in some other line and he may yet
add some luster to England's his-
torv. There have been goed Ed-
wards on the English throne and
there is no reason to believe that
the present Edward may be other-
wise. He has always been a "good
fellow" anyway and there are
more than the followers and syco-
phants of the court of St. James
who will join in wishing a long
and prosperous "reign to Edward
the Seventh.

The Alice Echo things it would
be a mistake for the Brownsville
railroad to go to Corffns Christi.
If the. Echo is really sure about
it perhaps the road would better
go to Alice instead. The project
ors ought to look into tho matter
seriously. As surveyed it would
seem that the line is not projected
to touch either place. Maybe
Alice and Uorpns would better
both move over to the intersection
of the survey with the Texas-Mex
ican.
Joseph Bailey was elected "To
the United States senate by the
Texas legislature last Tuesday to
succeed Senator Chilton. Mr.Bai-
ley is a comparatively youug man
but has already gained national at-
tention by his leadership of demo-
crats in the house. He is consid-
ered a staterman of ability and a
brilliant orator. His career in the
senate will doubtless reflect credit
on the great Lone Star State.
Roosevelt will visit El Paso
shortly. There are not any lions
there for Teddy to kill but when
he gets there El Pasoans will have
a live lion to stare at not a man
eater but just a nice one of the
"politico social species which we
iVmericans love as genuinely as the
British do love a lord.
