POLL TAX TIME
LIMIT EXPIRES.
Interest is Aroused Among Mem-
bers of the Legislature By Re-
ports That Tax Has Been
Paid by "Agqnts."
Austin Tex. Jan. 31. At 12
o'clock tonight the time will expire
when voters may poll' tax and
qualify for voting during the next
twelve months. This being the last
day for the payment of poll tax for
that purpose also the last day for
the payment of other taxes without
penalties there' has according to
information received here been a
run upon the. col lector's offices in
the larger counties of the State es-
pecially in those counties where city
elections or local option elections
are in prospect. It is said that in
such counties "agents" have taken
out large blocks of poll tax receipts
and that in some places large sums
of money have been deposited with
the names of parties to whom re-
ceipts are to be issued as soon as
the clerical forces can get to them.
The recent developments in the
poll tax matter andthoinformatiot
received here that'agents" a re pac-
ing poil taxes and pocketing liio r.
ceipts has aroused a great de:.l us'.
interest among the member.-f t e
Lecislature. and much thmi.-l.t U
being given to tho matter of provid-
ing laws to prevent abuss of the
poll tax provision. Perhaps such
a radical measure as suspending
the law providing for local option
elections for a year may be intro-
duced. Judge A. W. Terrell in his elec-
tion bill proposed before the as
sembling of the I.cgislat'jre aimci -
pa.ted the evil use that would oej Very fine food f.r live stock.' e-j -made
of poll tax receipts and pro- yuxiy hogs and Mr. Slaydc- hr.--
vided guanls against such abuses.

the postponement of the big excur-

is only until tho 10th of February.
The reason for the delay is that the
