Library Thieves Take Toll,
Volumes Stolen, Ruined
ByPAULMCGUFFEY

Volume 13 of Tex. Jur. 2d is
missing from the library. It is
also missing from the libraries at
the University of Houston and
Texas Southern, said Mrs.
Frances Thompson, our
librarian.
The facts were discovered
when the librarians were at their
conference at the University of
Missouri recently. Mrs.
Thompson explained that the
book is important for the
current problem in Legal Writing
n.
Because this problem is
peculiar to South Texas, the
implication is that South Texas
students, finding the volume
missing in their library, went to
the other schools for a copy.
Mrs. Thompson says the
better students are the book
thieves. "They are the ones who
know where the books are," she
said.
"They take the books
through thoughlessness, not
malice to other students," she
said. "But it shows their general
disregard for their fellow man."
Part of the blame can be put
on the professors and
administrators for not abating
the losses, Mrs. Thompson
believes. The theft problem
arises most often when there is a
shortage created by too many
students working on the same
problem. Professors should
notify the library in advance, she

said.
But students not only take
books, they. mutilate volumes,
she said.
Students in Wills tear forms
from books. Someone in the
Employee Rights Seminar
removed more than 50 pages
from one volume. A Real
Property student cut out a page
of a case on Tresspass to Try
Title. Students break binders to
remove pages so they can xerox
two at a time.
A partial check on April 9
showed 18 volumes missing from
the library. Mrs. Thompson says
one half or more of the missing
volumes come back after they
are no longer needed for the
particular class, or after they
have been replaced.
Replacement costs money.
The library has no separate
budget for losses, says Mrs.
Thompson. And any losses
decrease the funds for
improvement of the library
collection. The cost is high.
But more important to
students is the replacement time,
four to six months. During this
time, anyone needing the book
is out of luck.
Nye Sweeps Singles
Tourney Success
By BUCK BLANKNER
ANNOTATIONS Staff Writer
The first SBA sponsored
spring tennis tournament
champion is Mike Nye. The
windy weekend contest was held
on April 5 and 6.
"The turnout was
tremendous," said organizers.
The games were played on
schedule, despite the weather.
Nearly 50 tennis buffs
competed in the single
elimination contest, which
culminated in a walk away win
for Mike Nye in singles, and Jon
Wagner and Mike Snyder taking
the doubles.
Nye defeated a game, but
weary, Jon Wagner in the singles
finals. The match was filled with
many excellent volleys and
adept shots by both players, but
Nye was too strong that day. He
won 8-2.
The finals in doubles was
another story. In that match
Wagner and Snyder were
victorious over the determined
and scrappy play of Jim Rose
and Rollin Fischer.
Due to the success of this
first tennis tournament and the
interest it has arroused, there has
been talk of starting a Tennis
ladder for continuing
competition. A summer
tournament is also under
consideration.
