A healthier happier heartier lianU-
somer party of gentlemen never Ictt tlie
Alamo city and struck a Uee tine for the
guir than that which left San Antonio
yesterday morning under the safe con-
duct of the ollkers of the San Antonio
and Araniaa Ps railroad. The party
waa oompoied or the officers and direc-
tor! of the road and their guests; the
latter Including many or tho leading
business men or the city and the repre-
sentatives or the dally press. The only
drawback to tho perfect enjoyment or
tho day waa the unavoidable abseace or
the president or the road U. Lott who
had been unexpectedly called south at
too late an hour to adult or postponing
the arrangements made for the trip.
In his absence the honors or the occa-
sion fell upon Secretary and TrafHe Man-
ager 11. F. Yoakum who Is a host In him-
self Dd to whose unremitting attention
to the comfort of his guests they were In-
debted for one or the pleasanteit day
overspent between the auro borealls
and the equator. The excursion was ar-
ranged for the purpose or affording the
directors and their friends an appor-
tunlty to Inspect the road Just com-
pleted to lleovllle examine tho charac-
ter of Its construction note the country
through which It passed and form their
own opinions concerning the road Itself
and the outlook for future business. The
excursion was In the hands or Secretary
Yoakum; Yardtnaster Owen Slnnott
took charge or the train ; the
engine was handled by that young vet-
eran or the Iron horse Tom Slnnott
whose manipulation or the lever was as
skillful as Fireman Miller's attention to
the door of his little crematory waa con-
stant. Drakemaa Black who was by no
means a black brakeman brought up
the rear.
Thus equipped at fifteen minutes past
even on the morning of June 17 1SS0
the excursion train for Beevllle pulled
out from the San Antonio and Aransas
1'ass depot In this city for Beevllle dis-
tant ninety-six miles and to which
plaoe the road bad Just been completed.

The train consisting or the president's
car and one passenger coach had hardly
passed the city limits before It was no-
tloed that the the Iron steed bad
graven on his crest the name ol "A
Belknap." This was accepted as a hap
py augury and commented upon as
Colonel Belknap's name generally stands
aponser lor success In what be under
takes. The run to Floresvllle 31 miles
was made In one hour and ten minutes;
the run to Kenedy M miles. In less than
two hours; from that station down the
pace was more moderate the entire run
of 00 miles lnoludlng several stoppages
being made In three hours 'and twenty'
five minutes. The short train rolled
over the newly completed road as
smoothly aa though It was gliding over
some long established trunk lino and
had the transfer been made to the
Aransas Pass road from the Penns-
ylvania In the nlgbt the change
would not be perceptible. Tho
olid nature of the road bed
waa the theme of uilvereal
prairie aa waa also the character or the
brldgei and;tlmber constructions or all
kind. The side tracks swltobes sec-
tion houses.itatlon bouses arid platforms
water tanks and (took pens were all of
tho same general oharacter substantial
In their construction and evidently
made with one eye open to a large
traffic and the oilier to the require-
ments of a good taste. The barn-like
structures for depot buildings usually
seen along the line or new roads wire
conspicuously absent the buildings be-
ing modern In design and pleasing In
their general architectural features. The
tame Is true or Ihe section bouses the
older or which have neat gardens around
them the design being to have good
gardens and fruit trees surrounding each
section house along tho line.
TIIK lOtl.NtllV TIKVr.tliKll.
The lection of oountry lying between
this city and Floresvllle lias been loo
often described to need particular men-
tion. The road follows Ihe valley of
the San Antonio river and runs through
the very garden of Texas it has a rich
soil some good timber In the valleys.llno
rolling uplands every square foot capa-
ble of profitable cultivation and lying
to the eye as beautifully aa any country
on Ood's green earth. Excellent crops
of cotton and corn even under
the primitive condition of Texas Ullage
were rapidly left beblnd as we whirled
through the miles now rattling over a
bridge now rushing through a valley
now rising over a ridge from which the
Interminable miles of rolling upland
and wooded valleys could be seen
stretching away In billowy greenness to
the far off horizon. 'I ho whole scene
was charming. The spirits rose with
every mile we traveled and there wat
but one expression of opinion concerning
the lands that lie between this city and
the Uuir belt and that was an unquall-
lied acceptance ol their great fertility
under a proper s)slem or agrlmiltuie.
I he whole reglonor country lying south
or Kan Antonio for one hundred miles
should be made the market garden and
fruit orchard of Texas. The soil may
bo generally described as a rich sandy
lonm varying In depth from one Toot to
three feet. Below this a stratum or clay
yellow or reddish or from two to three
feet and below tills adobe clay until the
rock Is reached. Floresvllle Is building
up rapidly. Her new conrt bouse looms
up splendidly as you approach the em
bryo city from the south and there are
several private dwellings and business
blocks In course of construction
that would be n decided acqui-
sition to any city In the state. Tho rail-
road has not given the city the goby as
la too often tho case. The track skirts
the city within a few blocks of its busi-
ness center the depot being distant
about a half mile from the court-house
square. There are signs ot Improve
ment an along ine roau. cotton tieias
are now ready to bloom where last win-
ter the ground was covered with n thick-
growth or small Umber. Some Idea or
the extent to which land Is being oleared
ror cultivation may be Inferred from tbe
fact that since the opening or the road
ror tralUo this year over 300 carloads or
wood have been shipped to San Antonio
freiu one station along the line.
jACisoN'tt ai'Lcii
destined to be the great picnic grounds

miles below town contains tbe finest
mineral springs In Texas. Seven differ-
ent kinds of mineral waters are round
Issuing from the sides of the gulcb with-
in a short distance of each other while
lust across tbe railway track from the
springs Is found one of the finest natural
springs of water to be met with nny-
wuere. joe volume oi water nowing
from this spring would till a twelve-Inch
supply pipe and Is utilized by the rail
way company lor lining tueir tanks.
The water supply for railway purposes
all along the line is good. Tanks are
placed all along tbe road at a distance
of from fifteen to twenty miles for
which tbe pumping la done by steam.
There are also special tanks lor emer
gencies me pumps oi uiicn are run ny
water power. Klmendorf a station
about seventeen miles below town Is
ing out seme oi tne best pottery
brick ever seen In this statu. The
clay Is there of superior quality Is In-
exhaustible quantities and It Is only a
question of months when the Klmendorf
lards will supplant the Laredo and
other brick yards from which so consid
erable a portion of our uunuing brick Is
procured.
Time does not admit or a more minute
description of places and localities and
their attractions. Suffice It to say that
at Kenedy fifty-nine miles below town
wo reach tbe point at which the Waco
branch of the Han Antonio and Aransas
Pass road diverges from tbe main line ;
at Pettus eighty miles from this city
we reach the new stock yards or the
road which are destined to corral more
cattle for this line than many men be-
lieve will ever go ovor the entire south-
ern extension; Walton eight miles far-
ther south named after the wide-awake
sheriff or Bee oounty is the finest natu-
ral location for a town between this city
and the gulf.
INTO nthMLI.E ON TIMK.
Ahead or time as tbe Belknap gener-
ally Is we rolled Into Beevllle to find
the town all alive and ready to do honor
to the excurslslonlsts. The committee
of arrangements were drawn up In tile
under a shady mat of live oak trees
about two rods from where the cars
sloped and to this Inviting spot mar-
shaled by Mr. Yokum the procession
tiled and were duly presented to the
master of ceremonies A. C. Jones.
Mr. Jones cordially weloomed us to the
hospitalities of the town In a brief but
feeling speech and presented the other
members of the committee W It.

oommonera and to which we were cordi-
ally welcomed by W. F. Kills the host.
As dinner waa not due for an hour tbe
representative of the Light puthlmseir
under the guidance or I. A. T. Walton
the sheriff of the county and proceeded
to do tbe town.
Beevllle Ilea on a level plat of ground
above the Paesta creek. The town
Is about upon the same level aa
the railway bridge over the creek
which by engineer Corners levels Is two
hundred and fifteen feet above tide wa-
ter. Tbe original town plat covered one
hundred and fifty acres since which
time about 200 acres have been added.
The streets are laid out regularly a uni-
form width of sixty feet and tbe blocks
are three hundred feet square. The
county was organized In 1862 and Bee-
vllle la tbe county seat. The present
population Is about four hundred four-
uuns or wuom are wutte. mere are live
general merchandizing establishments

two wood shops and aa line a livery
table aa can be found In Southern
Texas. This stable owned by Clare &
Son Is supplied with all the modern
conveniences. Their stock well supplies
a constant stream of water for a GOO
gallon tank built Jvutjunder the sails ol
their windmill and from this tank the
yard stables and carriage houses are
served with water by pure hydraulic
pressure. There Is a neat church In the
little town recently built. Tho old
school house has been sold to tbe col-
ored peoplo for a church and school
building combined and a new school
building will soon be erected. The
grounds set apart for school and
academy purposes cover thirteen acres
lie Just north of the business portion of
town on tho highest ground In the vicin-
ity. Home new buildings are In process
ofercctloii and no doubt in time Messrs.
Martin A Hchryver ;of this city .will
open up an extensive lumber yard there
as they havo already done at Horeivllle.
The town lies about ten or twelve miles
from the extensive southern limit of the
rolling prairie below which lies tho dead
level of the coast lands. The soli of tho
whole country Is wonderfully rich easy
of cultivation and there Is no scarcity or
water. At a distance or twenty feet
below the surfaoo good water

for household purposes; at twloe that

Dinner was announced at a few min-
utes past one o'clock to which some
fifty hungry men did amnio Justice.
Time and want of tpaco forbids any at-
tempt at description of the feast
of which we all ate heartily
Iced milk and hot coffee doing duty for
liquids of the Lone Star brand. When
the guests bad satisfied their stomacks
and their consciences a move was made
to retire but Mr. Schryvcr called a halt
and Captain Ous Houston was called
upon to return thanks. The oaptaln'a
"grace after meat" was a very graceful
acknowledgement of the courtesies ten-
dered thu party by the citizens of Bee-
vllle and a cordial wish ror a stronger
cementing or the bonds or commercial
mid social fellowship between tho citi-
zens of Beevllo and the metropolis or
southwestern Texas. Adjourning to
the verandah wo found carriages await-
ing our disposal and tbe hour until train
time was spent In taking In tbe situa-
tion. In a little aside with tralllo man-
ager Yoakum tbe Lioht representative
was Informed that contraoti had been
made with the road for shipping 1M
cars or stock from the 17th to the 31st
of this month Inclusive. Contractor
Nichols also Informed us that he
would strike salt water In CO
days with an engine If no un-
expected delays occurred as every mile
of the road was 'covered with graders
save one stretch of twelve miles upon
which ho would place teams before tbe
close of tho month. Many other things
were said and suggested of which this
deponent salth not but all going to
demonstrate that the Sau Antonio and
Aransas Pass railroad has a magnlllcent
future before It and that those who havo
managed Its affairs have devised wisely
and bullded well.
IIOMKWAUD HOUND
At 3 o'clock the signal for the return
was souuded. Several gentlemen or the
committee accompanied us on the return
until we met the down train where they
bade us a hearty good bye and speedily
vanished toward the Oulf. Slnnott
opened the throttle valve or A. Belknap
and the excursionist! came home like a
race horse under a strong pull. Com-
missary Oeneral Lockwood had provided
for nil those who were athlrst. Wbon a

bon straight morn Ice bottled beer. Ice

Is a hard case; we kept comfortable.
When ltuss Schryver Houston and
Belknap can't engineer a crowd straight
to the wicket gate of a genuine good
time with no sorrow to como In the
morning a good time cannot be had In
Texas. When tbe San Antonio and
Aransas Pass railway president's car
holds a happier heartier party than It
carried home last night It will leave
Texas to pick them up. Honors were
easy and each good fellow vied with bis
neighbor In making the hours pass
pleasantly and the spirit of good fel-
lowship was unmarred by a single dis-
cordant element. Two llttlo incidents
that occurred on the return must be
noted and we close:
Mr. Hchryver having taken possession
of Conductor Slnnott's cap (who by the
way had kindly volunteered his services
foi the trip) Ihe big-hearted lumberman
quietly passed It round among the stock-
holders of the road and as quietly re-
marked as he returned It to tho owner
who was In another car "we have put a
new lining In It for you Slnnott tbat
you may remember the trip." Tbe as-
tonishment of tbe man who Is always
"Owen" and yet "Sln-nott" can be
readily Imagined when be round his
months salary almost duplicated.
As we neared the San Antonio river
crossing It was Intimated to the gentle-
men In tbe rear car tbat they were
wanted In front. An adjournment was
made to the passenger coach and order
called when Editor Messmer of the
LiaiiT presented the following paper
which was unanimously endorsed with
a tiger as expressing the sentiments ot
those present.
