NASA DEDICATES COLUMBIA MEMORIAL AT NATIONAL CEMETERY
WASHINGTON (AP) — NASA Administrator Sean
O'Keefe on Monday dedicated a memorial to the crew
of space shuttle Columbia at Arlington National Cem-
etery, eulogizing the astronauts as "pilots, engineers
and scientists all motivated by a fire within."
More than 400 Columbia family members, former
astronauts and NASA staff attended the dedication,
which took place a year and a day after the ship disin-
tegrated on its return to earth, claiming the lives of all
seven astronauts.
The memorial features a bronze replica of a mis-
sion patch designed by crew members. The names of
the Columbia astronauts are etched into the bronze,
which is set on Vermont marble.

'Low-tar' still harms Mars rovers
Lighter labels on cigarettes don't mean healthier habits
Aaron Scott

With low-carb diets hitting
the mainstream media, it is
common to see companies
like Michelob pushing new
products like Michelob Ultra,

the beer is more beneficial to
the consumer.
Similarly, cigarette compa-
nies have been labeling cer-
tain cigarettes as "low-tar"
making them sound better

been taken as truth

lung cancer. Most cigarette
companies have products
that are "low-tar," "light"
and "medium." Such titles
incorrectly imply that low-
tar cigarettes, as opposed to
regular cigarettes, are less
harmful to the lungs.
The study found that smok-
ers of the lighter types of ciga-
rettes generally take longer
and more intense drags than
smokers of regular cigarettes.
Because lighter cigarette-
smokers take in more smoke
at a time, they end up with the
same amount of nicotine as a
smoker of a regular cigarette.

reach out to
touch ground
PASADENA, Calif. (AP)
- NASA's twin rovers
reached out their robotic
arms to touch the surface
of Mars on Monday, mark-
ing the first day of the joint
$820 million mission that
both spacecraft were in full
swing.
Opportunity and Spirit,
6,600 miles apart on oppo-
site sides of the planet, be-
gan the work- ^■
week gearing
up for in-depth
analyses of the
soil and rocks
beneath their
wheels.
Opportuni-
ty rolled onto
the martian
ground on Sat-
urday, a week after it land-
ed. Spirit arrived Jan. 3 but
broke off its science work
nearly two weeks ago after
software problems crippled
the vehicle.
On Monday, mission man-
ager Jennifer Trosper said
Spirit had joined Opportuni-
ty back at work, even as en-
gineers worked out the last
kinks in its software.
"We have two operation-
al rovers on Mars," Trosper
said at NASA's Jet Propul-
sion Laboratory.
Also, NASA unveiled the

first 360-degree color pan-
oramic image taken by Op-
portunity of its landing site.
The rover touched down in
one of the flattest, smooth-
est regions on Mars but ulti-
mately came to rest inside a
crater 72 feet across.
"It provides us with a real
sense of 'you are there/" said
scientist Jeff Johnson of the
U.S. Geological Survey of-
fice in Flagstaff,
Ariz. Johnson
likened the mo-
saic image to
the overlapping
snapshots tour-
ists often take of
the Grand Can-
yon to capture
its full sweep.
Opportunity
stretched out its robotic arm
and photographed in detail
each of the four instruments
it carries. The arm - formally
known as an "instrument
deployment device" - is the
most complex mechanism on
each rover and was reported
to be working well.
Spirit resumed use of its
own arm, picking up where
it left off. NASA planned for
it to brush the dust off a vol-
canic rock dubbed Adiron-
dack, allowing the rover's to
photograph it in extreme
close-up.
