Our city of Denton might be
known for its musicians, artists
and constant traffic off Interstate
Highway 35, but it's not all that
often that Denton is known for it's
great Italian food.
Opinion
Adequate food, awkward service
and great bread describe a Friday
night dinner outing at Luigi's Pizza
Italian Restaurant located at 2317 W.
University at Bonnie Brae St.
The smell of pizza, pasta and
tomato sauce filled the air and
created a great first impression. The
walls were covered with paintings
and murals of famous spots around
Italy, which made for a great Italian
atmosphere. The restaurant was not
too crowded for a Friday night, which
opened the room up for a nice, quiet
and possibly romantic evening.
The red chairs and green table-
cloths again added an Italian aspect
to the dinning experience.
The meal began with an order of
calamari for $5.95. After bringing
the appetizer to the table with
my Diet Pepsi - not Coke because
they don't carry Coke - the wait-
ress stood awkwardly at the head
of the table for a moment before
proceeding to ask if I wanted bread.
It was a bit of an uneasy conversa-
tion with unneeded moments of
silence. The calamari was not the
best, but it was fairly good, espe-
cially with the marinara dipping
sauce. The bread was very large and
tasty, but a little on the spicy side.
It made for a great muncher while
examining the menu.
Before we ordered, the wait-
ress continued looking over at or
walking past the table. Possibly
her constant eye on the table was
due to the lack of customers in the
restaurant at that time, but it made
Italy
for a nervous ordering process.
Most pasta dishes including
spaghetti, manicotti, ravioli and
lasagna all cost around $6. Pizzas
cost a little more depending on
the size and number of toppings
orders. A medium pepperoni
pizza costs close to $9. Actual
dinner specials are served over
spaghetti and cost around $9 or
more. They include dishes such as
chicken Marsala, shrimp scampi
and salmon picatta. In the after-
noon, Luigi's offers a great lunch
special that varies daily, and $6
can buy you a pasta dish, bread,
side salad and a drink.
The best advice I can pass on
when dining at Luigi's would be to
ask your waiter to go easy on the
dressing when ordering a side salad.
The house dressing was very good
and tasted just right, but a salad
drenched in dressing takes away
from the taste a bit. Try the lunch
special on Friday afternoons because
the baked ziti is the best pasta dish
on the menu. It was hot, cheesy and
all around very tasty. The lasagna
was just okay, so you might want to
try ordering something not as messy
and stringy for a main course.
The most odd part of the
dinning experience was paying
the final bill. The waitress brought
over the check, but it didn't show
any prices on it. There were basi-
cally close to no numbers on the
bill at all. Keep in mind you must
pay at the register in the back of the
restaurant, which makes leaving a
tip a little complicated if you are
not paying with a credit card.
Denton doesn't quite compare
to Italy when it comes to food and
service, but if you are looking to
dine in or carry out an enjoyably
large, inexpensive Italian lunch or
dinner, check out Luigi's. Just make
sure to catch the restaurant before
10 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays
because it's closed on Mondays.
