Dallas campus
prepares to be
free-standing
By Lindsey Hannon
Contributing Writer
NT's Dallas Campus enrollment
increased 16 percent from spring
2007, according to an unofficial
census taken by the campus.
The 76,000 square-foot building
has 1,844 students this semester. It
had 1,598 in spring 2007.
Full-time enrollment is also up
20 percent to 766 students.
Gregory Tomlin, director of
marketing for the Dallas Campus,
said the satellite school is waiting for
advanced funding to begin construc-
tion on a new building in January
2009. The new building should be
finished in the fall of 2010.
There is only one building that
occupies the 264-acre Dallas
Campus.
It sits near the intersection of
Interstate 35E and Interstate 20 on
Houston School Road.
Tomlin said the building is at
capacity every semester.
"Every space in the building is
maximized including classrooms,
offices and faculty" Tomlin said.
"Without a new building, there is
a risk of not meeting our academic
objections."
When the new building is ready,
the campus will be able to add
different courses to the curric-
ulum.
"We would like to add a life science
program." Tomlin said. "With a new
building we would be able to have
laboratories for the different science
classes."
The second building is the begin-
ning of a master plan to become a
free-standing university.
Then the campus will begin
admission for a new freshman class
and be called the University of North
Texas at Dallas.
Tomlin said the Dallas Campus is
20 percent Hispanic, and the campus
wants a 25 percent Hispanic popu-
lation once it is freestanding. The
university would then become a
Hispanic Serving Institution and
get more federal funding.
