Senator Herring offered the following resolution:
(Senate Resolution 12)
Whereas, The State of Texas lost one of its most distinguished
citizens in the death on October 27, 1970, of Col. Morris Schwartz; and
Whereas, Col. Schwartz had served since 1955 as the Director of the
Selective Service System in Texas, and for seven years prior to that
date had served as Deputy Director; in both these posts his unusual
abilities and the high quality of his leadership won him universal re-
spect; and
Whereas, In forty-nine years as a member of the United States Army,
he saw active duty in two world wars, and as commanding officer of the
835th Signal Service Battalion in the China, Burma, and India theater
of World War II was awarded the Legion of Merit; and
Whereas, Col. Schwartz, a forty-year resident of Austin, was for
more than fifty years associated with the University Methodist Church,
the Austin Scottish Rite and Ben Hur Shrine Temple, and the Billy
Morse Lodge No. 1152 at Denison; and
Whereas, This man will long be remembered for his many years of
dedicated service to the people of this State and this Nation; and
Whereas, He is survived by his widow, Maggie Lemon Schwartz; two
brothers, Julius Schwartz and Jack Schwartz, both of Dallas; and three
sisters, Mrs. Sarah Engelberg of Fort Worth, Mrs. Carolyn Sanderson
of Abilene, and Mrs. Lil Sanger of Dallas; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Senate of the 62nd Texas Legislature, that by
this Resolution tribute is paid to Col. Morris Schwartz and deep sym-
pathy extended to his family; and, be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
copies of this Resolution for the family of Col. Morris Schwartz and
that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Col.
Morris Schwartz.

On motion of Senator Herring the resolution was adopted by a rising
